Anxiety & PPD (advice needed please help)

edited September 2011 in Pregnant
I have a friend who is currently 23 weeks pregnant and is trying to deal with anxiety issues. Her doc said once the baby was born they would discuss the possibility of medication. Her main concern right now is the possibility of her developing PPD and she has some questions for those who have gone through this before. She's hesitant to take meds because she want to bf.

Q(s): What are the chances I will develop PPD? Does it go away naturally or would i need meds? How do you know if you have it symptom-wise?

A(s): [please fill in the blank]

  • I was told ppl who have depression before or during pregnancy are more likely to develop ppd. It can go away naturally but doesn't always. Talk therapy and herbal supplements ( that don't interfere w bm and Are approved by ob/ped ) are ways to cope w ppd wo being on actual meds. She should start talk therapy now, I have found it extremely helpful during pregnancy. I remember reading in What to except when your expecting about how to tell if Its ppd or Just baby blues but don't remember what it said.... hope this helped!
  • @314babymama1120 thanks i'll pass this along
  • I had ppd with my son and I was too embarrassed to talk to my doc so it took about 9 months for it to go away without meds...I'm more prone to anxiety so I knew that ppd could be a possibility, I think I have a little of it this time around with my daughter and will discuss it with me doc at my 6 week appt...I'm not going to take any meds while breastfeeding but will probably take them when I stop breastfeeding, I will be a much better mother to both my children when I'm happier and less anxious
