Pumping Question??

edited September 2011 in Breastfeeding
Hey guys, I have a preemie and she still can't latch on so I am pumping every 4 hours or so. She is 11days old and my milk came in around day 4. I had a ton at the beginning but now I can only get about 3 ounces out of my right boob and 2 out of my left. It takes about 15-20 minutes for each boob, but I've been reading that other ladies have a ton of milk.
How much milk do you get when you pump and how long does it take?

  • You might want to try pumping every 2 hours instead of 4. And pump for 15-20 min or until you don't see anymore drops. With my preemie I was able to pump 2-3oz each breast until he was able to latch. Pumping esp at night in between 1 and 5am is crucial
  • I was the same lol..nice to know there's another pregly in my boat! When my milk came in (also around day 4) I got a ton, like 11oz at one time at one point. So I saved it in the freezer for her later. Then after a week or so it went down like you said to between 4-5 oz per pumping (I also go every 3-4 hours). I think its pretty common. Just make sure to pump for 15 minutes and set the vacuumm setting on the pump as high as you can (don't hurt your self tho lol)! Sounds like were about the same with 4-5 oz every 3-4 hours. Lilly will be 6 weeks on Monday and I'm still about 1 week ahead of her with what I have frozen. Just keep on it and its sounds like you guys wll be fine :) good luck mama!
  • Towards the end of pumping when flow slows start squeezing your breast. There is a ton more milk in there! Also buy a nipple shield. Ava was a preemie and couldnt latch on. She took from the shield right away.
