my newborn does not sleep at night

edited October 2011 in Babies
My newborn is 9 days old and does not sleep at night she cries every 20 min looking for her pacifer then it gets to a point where she doesn't want it at all so I have to rock her to sleep once I put her down again 10-20 min later she cries it gets to the point where I lay her down with me in bed. But in the morning its a different story she will sleep in her crib fine its always the same time every night. During the day I have the lights on tv on we talk with our regular voices and st night the lights are off we whisper I'm a ftm is this common am I doing the right thing?

  • Are u nursing or anything? There is a hormone in it at night that makes u and baby sleepy so nursing her to sleep with u helps. Mine was a cluster feeder and would get grumpy if he wast attached to me for a while at nite
  • u can try a bedtime routine of feeding, bath, ect.. do the same every night
  • I'm pumping right now but she's on formula
  • But its normal for a newborn to adjust to a sleep pattern, some take longer than others
  • Try music or the tv on maybe its to quite
  • My first took about a month to adjust days
    And nights
  • I hope so she screams her head off and it scares me like if I'm doing something wrong.
@mrswright I was thinking the same thing maybe its too dark I really need to get a night light
  • How do you put her down? My little boy did that until my SO bought me a swaddler, worked wonders. He also sleeps much better if theres background noise, because there is always noise when they are in the womb.

And, just gonna throw this out there, if nothing else works you can try cosleeping.
  • We do swaddler her but she like to have her arms out right next to her head so idk if that's still considered swaddling but when we do swaddler she manages to squeeze her arms out lol. That would probably be my last resort :(
  • Old wives tale, but my mom says to flip her (not by her feet or anything) just making the motion. They say the baby has day and night mixed up...
  • Definetly try a night light and swaddle my baby did the same thing at first she has to have a night light and swaddled to sleep otherwise we r up all night!!
  • She probably needs noise to sleep. My daughter did that for a while... tonight was the first night she actually slept during the night while it was quiet in the house. The womb is a dark, warm environment full of constant noise. You could try a heartbeat bear, or a white-noise machine. I have a fan in my bedroom for white noise, and cuz she is a tummy sleeper at 5 weeks. I know it's dangerous, but her neurologist only said "you know, when I got my degree, they were teaching us to put them to bed only on their bellies. But, of course, they always change their minds about those things..." so he didn't tell me not to....

Sorry, didn't mean to get off topic. But fans are supposed to help reduce the risk of SIDS (especially with tummy sleepers) cuz it circulates air. It doesn't point directly on her.
