Exclusively pumping?

edited October 2011 in Breastfeeding
Is anyone just pumping? , how often? how much do you usually get per breast? What bottles do you use?

  • I was for the first 3 weeks cause my son was in nicu. I was using the hospital pump, it came with amadela pump an bottles. I got about 2 ounces per breast the first week and 3-4 after the first week. Every woman is different tho!
  • @myasmommy2009 how often did you pump

  • I pumped every 2 hours :) I could have pumped more each breast but I just filled the 4 oz bottle and stopped :)
  • I can't get baby to latch on. And when he does its just nipple and hurts like hell. I am doing everything right I think he opens wide then acts like he is gonna latch good then sounds like he is sucking air and slips down to my nipple every time. I've tried nipple shields and everything. Idk where to go who to talk to for a lactation consultant but I can already feel my supply decreasing and I try to pump every 4 to 6 hours cuz I feel like that's when my breasts are full and I usually get between 3 to 4.5 each and he only eats about 2.5 oz every 3 to 4 hours. Idk if I should try to pump more frequently? My son is 1 week 1 day old. I wanna keep breastfeeding if I can, I want all the nutrients and everything plus I can't afford formula right now. It's so OUTRAGEOUS.... IDK what to do, or how to fix it
  • @ashleyfew that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Idk when I should pump. For how long. What I can do to keep up my supply up.
Or how to get him to latch properly so I dont have to worry about it anymore.

@myasmommy2009 how long do you usually pump for?
  • Between 5-20 min depends on when I fill the bottle
  • Try calling the hospital or wic office or Google a post partum doula. They can all help with latching and other issues. Make sure babys mouth is wide and sandwich your nipple and bring baby to your nipple. Not nipple to baby. And have mouth looked at for possible tongue tie.@Tanners_Mommy
  • or check out the lalecheleague site for a local chapter.
  • I have exclusively pumped for three months I pump or try to every two hours until they are empty I get about three to four ounces whatever o have extra I freeze
  • I have been pumping for a little over two months now since my son is in the Nicu and I started out every two hours and was getting about 5oz off both then went to three hours now I pump every four hours and get 9oz off both
  • You should pump every two hours for 15 mins and drink lots of water ..I set an alarm to help me remember
  • Pump every two to three hours my supply is low I'm considering stopping
  • I pump 3-4 times a day. My lil girl can't latch on. I get anywhere from 2-4.5oz a boob. We use the playtex ventair bottles. I love em. She gets my milk at home and formula when we are not. She is 18days now.
  • @bahamamama4828 my son is tongue tied and it doesn't affect his ability to nurse thankfully. Although that's not the case with every baby who's tongue tied obviously. That was a good thought to throw out there I never saw a tongue tied baby or knew what it was til my son was born.

@tanners_mommy I tried to exclusively pump bc I had trouble latching my son after getting home...my supply dropped considerably. So I contacted the lactation consultant at my birthing hospital. She was a godsend on getting him back on the boob. Try the hospital where you gave birth, if they don't have a LC they should be able to tell you where to go. Or look into a la leche league close to you they'll also have resources. But you should pump every 2 hrs esp overnight and even then your supply may drop....
  • @mam082711 oh ya I see it a lot as an LC. Myself and 2 boys are tongue tied, nursing issues, eventually got clipped :)
  • @bahamamama4828 did it cause any speech difficulties with either yourself or the boys? Or was it clipped before talking? One dr at the pedi group I go to doesn't advocate tongue clipping (he says for speech your tongue doesn't need to do anything but touch your teeth), and the other 2 we've seen said a specialist knows more than they do so we should see an ENT if we're concerned and go from there. After dillon was born my fiance said he was tongue tied and he had a speech issue but his wasn't clipped til he was 3 so he had to take speech classes when he went to school...and apparently it can correct itself by tearing. But I think that would hurt :-(
  • Yup my 9 yr old has speech issues, he got his clipped later in life. I have no speech issues and my younger son was 2 or 3 months old when his was done. Ya a lot of kids fall or something and it tears. It's not too painful and sometimes they don't notice.
