Sleeping while feeding

edited October 2011 in Breastfeeding
My Little Man sleeps next to me in between his daddy and I at night, so feeding at night is really easy. It makes me nervous to put him in his bassinet at night Idk why, but I feel like he is safer sleeping next to me. My only concern is I can't stay awake while I am feeding him! We both fall asleep in the middle of it, is this a bad thing? I always make sure he can't roll onto his belly and that there isn't anything around his head that could suffocate him and I wake up frequently and make sure he is okay. But should I be concerned about anything? I know Im not going to roll over on him, I don't move from my side in my sleep anymore cuz of him and Im an extremely light sleeper anymore. Does anyone else do this? My son is only 5 days old. Also he prefers to sleep on his side, he rolls onto his side if he is laying on his back and he kicks his blankets off, he likes a cooler environment.

  • Totally normal :) dontcha just love that motherly instinct. Just wait until he starts nursing on his own in his sleep next to you, sometimes you wont even notice.
Its actually better for your supply to keep him close to you at night nursing.
  • @Bahamamama4828 sweet! I was afraid it was like a bad thing or something idk.. I cant sleep with out him RIGHT next to me, I feel empty lol! I remember when I was still in the hospital they took him away for his ekg, and he hadn't been out of my site yet, they said only a couple minutes.... they brought him back a half an hour later and I was doing everything I could not to yell at the lady for keeping my son for too long LOL!! freaked me out! I had night mares that night about people taking him away from me. He will occasionally nurse while Im asleep, but it wakes me up cuz he makes the cutest little snorting noises when he is trying to get at my nipples :X melts my heart!
  • I don't blame u! Lol awww I'm excited for those days again soon :)
  • do you bf? i fell asleep too..while bf. its natural to have the thoughts.. though.. is a common fear.. and i always would wake up stiff from laying in one position the whole night.. lol
  • @lae3 yeppers! He is def a boob baby! I wake up stiff too, my hip kills me cuz I don't hardly move, but I don't mind :)
  • me either.. i will have my new baby soon to cuddle with.. lol.. but it really is sweet.. i love nursing.. especially at night its so convenient! :X
  • Omg the other night I was breastfeeding at 2 am and we both fell asleep but I was sitting up and my head slumped to the side. I woke up 3 hrs later and I could barely pick my head up my neck was so stiff lol. I also sleep with my baby next to me most nights :)

  • Don't love ya how lazy you get to be when you bf? I just took a 2 hour nap and hubby doesn't complain because I was feeding the baby. I sleep with him in our bed everynight but I try to start him out in his bassinet and then I bring him to bed when he wakes up to eat. And then I never get up to put him back in his bassinet.
  • This is baby #4 and all 4 have nursed in bed with me. I think it's one of the advantages to breastfeeding. The only disadvantage is getting them in their own beds before age 6 lol. My oldest is 19 they've all survived sleeping next to me.
  • Malia sleeps between daddy and i everynight, under our cover with us. I love it, makes feeding so much easiier! I try to laay her in her bed,, even for naps.. but she wont take it (oops)
  • I loved it!! I did it until she was about 3 weeks cause thats when she started sleeping through the night. She sleeps anywhere from 8 to 12 hours at a time at night.
  • Glad im not doing, something wrong >:D<
  • I'm doing the same, my son is a week and 3 days old! Glad you asked!
  • I thought you weren't suppose to sleep with your baby? Bc it is a hazard. I haven't had my baby yet I'm due in 5 weeks, I'm just curious I guess.
  • U can safely cosleep with baby. There are studies to prove the benefits of it esp while breastfeeding.@teeniemommy
  • @teeniemommy I have heard the same thing, cuz of the risk of rolling over on top of them, BUT I honestly think a lot of those cases, the women were on heavy medication or purposefully suffocated their children and claimed it as an accident (not all cases of course!!!) But really, its hard to sleep hard enough to not notice something like that... hell its hard to sleep with a new born anywho! Gotta wake up to feed every 2 hours plus you are always on mommy alert just waking up to make sure baby is okay. It made me extremely nervous the first couple nights I slept with him at home, but I calmed down once I posted this and talked to a few other mommies and found out that most sleep with their babies next to them.
  • Oh okay, I'm a very light sleeper , always have been so I'm not worried, its just my hubby is very violent in his sleep and tosses and turns, ive woken up many times from him accidently hitting me in his sleep when he turns over. So I wouldn't feel comfortable with it. But I have the basinet right beside me.
  • I do the same thing. But I put her on my side my fiance is a very heavy sleeper. Or I kick him off the bed lol
But I do it and shes fine. She sleeps better with me then in her bassinet.
  • @teeniemommy my hubby was the same way! he elboed me in the face a few times while he sleeps! So I was really nervous about that as well, but now with the baby he sleeps with his back facing us and doesnt move? its weird the sudden change. Im thinking about setting up a barier tonight so he cant roll off the bed and hogging baby and most of the bed to see how that works out.
