breastfeeding and smoking ?s

edited October 2011 in Postpartum Health
Ok first off if u have nothing nice to say please move on, I have enough drama and stress in my life...

I'm just wondering if any of u mommys bf and smoke cigerrettes?
I started smoking again (I know its an awful habit and bad for me blahblahblah) I smoke about 6-7 a day...
I'm currently bfing and supplementing at least one meal a day with formula.
Ayvas pedi says she's perfectly healthy and developing well and gaining weight good, and yes she knows I smoke.
I wash up and change clothes..

Do any of your babies have problems because of ur smoking?
Or what did ur drs say about it?
My dr didn't make a big deal about it at all...

  • I dnt smoke but my friend started smoking while she was bf an her baby started bein super fussy an eventually stopd nursing. Her Dr said that its possible the smoke was changing the taste of her milk. I dnt knw how much of this is true cuz I didn't go to the Dr with her an this is all just what she said... But goodluck either way :)
  • Maybe, just maybe (please don't take offense) this has something to do with why she's being so fussy for you lately. I don't know if there's a connection but I've been keeping up with your threads.
  • I agree with @kcike812 and @august22baby can you switch to formula? Maybe that will help you both that way your bf can help with feedings. Did she go to the pediatrician today? Maybe see what they say.

Just a random thought, have you tried a formula for fussiness and gas, if so maybe a soy formula and cut the dairy outta your diet. My son was supper fussy as well and turned out to be an allergy to dairy. He would just sit and scream for hours, now he's happy as can be.
  • It only takes 3 hrs for the nicotine to dilute enough in your body. If you're going to smoke do so right afters she's done eating so by the next time she eats you won't have a reason to worry. I plan on starting back smoking again too. I did it w/ my daughter both while I was bf and when she got on formula, she perfectly healthy. If her doc have no worries then neither should you. It sounds like you're doing everything right
  • it has crossed my mindthat that may be y she is fussy. Yesterday she had diarrhea so idk if that as part of it as well. But now today she's being an angel and she was good for the sitter last night and evn slept through the night. But yes if it continues to b an issue after going to the dr I will be quitting. I don't want to stop bfing
  • Ya I only smoke while she's napping
  • Or when I know she'll b getting a bottle instead of boob
  • I smoke and my son is completly normal and happy. He is perfectly healthy gaining weight and he sleeps great and is very active during the day. Keep your clothes from him if u have smoked in them and always wash your hands!! My doc has never said anything to me about it.
  • Ya I wash and change clothes. Do u bf? @happymommyof2

  • Yes I do. And he is great a very good eater . He sleeps at night and he is eight weeks. He just started sleeping really good in the past week only getting up one time in between 9 pm and 7 am. We have a schedule we follow and its been working really good
  • @ashleyfew thats good! My ayva weighs 11lbs at 6 wks.
@happymommyof2 ya ayva has slept thru the night the past 3 nights but she stays up almost all day it seems.

Can I ask how much u guys smoke a day?
  • Yup u can smoke and nurse but it is best to smoke after a feeding. It may change taste of milk and diminish supply though. I have a friend who smokes a ton with no nursing issues.
  • I smoke more than half but less than a whole pack a day.
  • @Bahamamama4828 thank u! Ya I do after feedings and if she wakes up early I usually do a formula meal.

@happymommyof2 ok ya I smoke a little less than half a day, it depends how the days going lol

Lol my daughter just scared the shit out of herself (literally) with a hiccup (random I know)
  • Aww how cute!!

  • I know nicotine gets into bloodstream my sister smokedand nursed for 18 mnths
  • it can pass though the milk the nicotine can thats why im not going to start after i have my little girl but hope this helps good luck %%-
  • I actually quit smoking to nurse cuz I smoked half my pregnancy (the latter half) and he came out with nicotine withdraws, so I ended up citing down to maybe 2 a day and today I quit completely. They will shake really hard when they cry and get fussy, kinda like an adult will from not having a smoke. It scared the crap out of me so I had to quit for him.
  • Ya she doesn't get the shakes or anything but has been fussy. But today she's been a complete angel! Full of smiles and calm and content. She only cried twice and that's cuz she was hungry. And she's sleeping amazing! Idk what her deal has been.

I'm staying at my parents, would that really mke a difference? I'm shocked at the change in her
