Breastfeeding & getting a tattoo, help ladies (please no bashing)

edited October 2011 in Just for Fun
I'm getting a tattoo for my son(6weeks old) but I'm breastfeeding, I was planning on stopping, but now I want to go ahead and keep breastfeeding as long as I'm able to. I'm scheduled to get my tattoo tomorrow evening & I'm just wondering if its okay or not okay to get a tattoo while breastfeeding? Thanks ladies

I feel ya on the tattoo thing! I have a gift certificate from last year to get one & have been dying to do it but waiting til I have my baby (11-11-11) to be honest I didn't even think of any risk while breast feeding now I think I have to evaluate the whole situation. Darn! I would feel completely wastful just pumping the milk & tossing it. I'm gonna check out the link posted by @blueberrysmom! Good luck either way!

  • Ask ur doc he/ she knows best
  • I got a tattoo when I was 4 months and I turned out fine. As long as you take care of it, it shouldn't get infected which is the reason they say not to get percings/tattoos while pregnant/breastfeeding.
  • As long as you know the shop is clean and you take care of it then you'll be fine. The risk is infection.. but as long as you do what needs to be done there is no reason you can't get a tattoo when bf

I have lots of tats and its your call bc u will find pos & neg about it ...do u know the shop & artist? U have to be careful to take care if it as well as going to a very clean place. Ask about how they clean & to see their tools. There are state laws so, u can educate yourself if u have the internet tonight before u go in. The ink doesn't go in far enough to be in your milk... it's the risk of infection when getting it or not taking care if it properly afterwards.

If they follow state rules & u take care of it after you should be fine. Good luck! :)
