formula??!??

edited December 2011 in Breastfeeding
sooo... I love breastfeeding but I HATE pumping! if I pump she seems to want to eat right after & then she has to eat forever after cuz I dont have a lot of milk left. she is a snacker& eats all day pretty much & that doesnt bother me EXCEPT when I have to go somewhere & have someone else watch her. im starting work on tue & im supposed to have a supply but I dont >.< I will be able to pump at work so I should be able to only give her bm after the first day of work because i wont have to feed her &can just pump so I would only be using formula sometimes when I go out other then work (which isnt often) is that bad? will her stomach handle well with formula & bm? I was going to start off with similac soy ( idk exactly what kind I have never looked ) is that a good formula? I dont want her to spit up alot (she has reflux) or worry about the dairy upsetting her any help would be helpful.

  • Honestly if a baby has a dairy allergy then they will most likely have a problem with soy. I bf and use formula. The soy stuff is nasty. It smells gross. I use Enfamil GentleEase. She doesn't spit up or have any stomach issues with it.
  • @steph_due_101611 how do you do it? feed both you just make formula sometimes and give it to your lo? baby doesnt care?
  • im kinda stressing on this. im always hesitant to try new things with her for some reaso. even putting her in 0-3 month outfits instead of newborn clothes lol im a weirdo

My babydaddy uses formula and breast milk with our 3 month old. He's done so, since she was about 18 days old. (when I went back to work)

I pump when I'm away and breastfeed when I'm with her. So, as far as formula goes, I use it only if my milk supply runs low or I'm fucking exhausted...like tonight...LOL

My babydaddy chose similac advanced formula, after I had a sample size. It took about 2 weeks for the baby to get used to the formula..and once...my babydaddy even tried the same formula with lowered amounts of lactose, when the baby was fussy and had gas (like a sailor in Indonesia..LOL)

The main problems we had with formula were

    1. She got constipated

It took a couple weeks, but her system got accustomed to the formula.

    2. She had diarrhea.

Once, when we switched to the lower lactose and had a day when we used half formula, half breastmilk. It wasn't severe, and lasted about 2 days, or so.

    3. The baby wasn't drinking the formula.

We figured out quickly, to make the formula taste better to the baby, we should make it with hot water and then cool it. Hot water makes the formula dissolve better. We also discovered that the baby likes formula at a warmer temperature than breastmilk would normally be.

So, just monitor the baby and formula will be no problem. And if you drink lots of soy milk, I see no issue with you using a soy-based formula. My babydaddy drinks whole milk..(eew)...and I drink soy...(yum)...the baby drinks what I drink VIA breastfeeding and has a tolerance for what her dad drinks...weird it works that way...but..she is part me..part him...LOL

Anyways, hope this helps a little...

Knockout time...since daddy put the baby to sleep!

    Dueces!
  • My little girl doesn't usually care. She's 11wks. She prefers the boob but has had 2 3oz bottles of formula today. Today was a good day. Some days she gets more formula. But it doesn't bother her.
  • Sometimes i mix it. Half formula and half bm. It helps with digestion from what i hear.
  • @mommy2be4the1sttime thank you! if I dont drink soy I shouldnt try the soy? hats the difference between soy & regular?@steph_due_101611 is there a gentle one for similac? wic gives similac I think so I dont wabt to use anything else
  • You can try similac sensitive. I don't do Wic but here they do Enfamil.
  • If you drink milk and consume lots of dairy then go with milk based formula.
  • @moodymommie i think that similac has a gentle one to my wic onky dose similax too but they used todo enfamil and i used the gentlease and its great!
  • Carnation good start maybe? Something in it makes for better digestion. Or so I heard. Whey proteins? I can't remember
  • Ya my mom used goodstart for my brother she said it was really good too
  • Similac has to forms of Sensitive formula. They have the orange can which is Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas (which my baby uses) and they have the green can which if I remember right is Similac Sensitive for spit up. Hope that helps a bit.
  • I bf and formula feed and at first my son would make faces when he got formula but now he's fine with it. He only had tummy issues for a few days but formula is harder on their bellies than bm. I use similac advance (blue can) and he's fine. Just beware their poop gets nastier lol
  • Oh and when I pumped I would mix bm and formula as well. He was fine with that too. Just make sure to mix the formula as you normally would (I use gerber bottled water, it's fluoride-free and $1 at walmart for a gallon) then add the bm to it.
  • thanks @everyone im going to try mixing one oz formula with three oz bm and then go to half half bit only when I need to go out
  • Pump after you feed her. Right after. And pumping between 3am and 5am is one of the most important pumping sessions.
