Midwife wont accept me because I'm high risk??? Whaaat!!

edited January 2012 in Pregnant
I chose to do research on a midwife, and wanted to give it a try. I like the idea of a birthing center, no iv, no cath, no drugs at all...I would rather be able to move around and not be constricted to the bed of a hospital. I hate nurses coming in every ten minute asking if I want an epidural. So, I figure, a midwife just might be what I would be best suited with. I called a local midwife, and she said because of my PSD, she wouldn't be able to take me, that I'm high risk and should be seen by an ob. Now...I don't understand...I know what PSD is, I've had it before...the only different thing is I'll have to be induced. We all know this. (If I go long into my pregnancy and experience too much pain my blood pressure will go through the roof and I'll put the baby at risk to be under a large amount of stress, and I have seen so many women go under for emergency csec...and I refuse to get cut) HOWEVER...there are natural ways to push the body into labor, a somewhat natural induction like massage techniques, pressure points, sweeping and massaging the cervix...ect. I would like to try to sway my body naturally to go into labor rather then pitocin...I don't need pain meds either, so it would be zero drugs. I know that a midwife also, in some and few incidents will use pitocin if deemed NECESSARY. Why would this midwife tell me she refuses to take me?? I'm pissed!!

  • I have no idea but maybe @homebirthadvocate or @bahamamama4828 can help?
  • Oh dear. I wouldn't think you were high risk and needed an ob unless you had issues during prenatal care with a midwife.
  • Is this a hospital midwife or birthing center midwife?
  • She's both. It really pissed me off and broke my heart at the same time. The only complication I have is pain, which...there's nothing I can do until I deliver, which I knew before I got pregnant I would have it again. I accept it. She got snooty with me and said "well I can't give out narcotics"...who the hell said I wanted to take a bunch of pills?? I don't want to give birth with an ob dr that's not even going to give it a more natural approach first, and I swear, if the nurses ask if I want a drug I'm going to throw something at her!!
  • I'm not a huge fan of cnms but cpms/dems are good...
  • @bahamamama4828 sorry I forgot to tag.
  • What is cnms or dems?
  • Cnms are the nurse midwives and dem is direct entry midwife. If no cnm practice will take you then I would find an ob and hire a doula. Psd is not high risk that's just silly.
  • @Bahamamama4828 What does a doula do? That's what I was thinking as well...my care isn't going to change, just a little complex at the end, which I would have assumed a midwife would be better for that anyways. The midwife that I tried to get in contact with today wasn't available, but I'm going to try her tomorrow...different midwife. This one is strictly at the birth center, and that's what I want! :-)
  • A doula will just advocate for you. Make sure its a good one! They make sure the doc doesn't push things you don't need and help you accomplish a natural delivery. Most midwives and doulas lower your chance of c sections, tears, forceps, ect.. :) just keep looking
  • I'm going to try this midwife again tomorrow. I'm not worried about the drs trying to give me unnecessary crap...I don't want anything. What are they gonna do,
  • Here's the thing the doctors need to listen to what YOU want not what they want to do etc. I tell my doctor what I want! If they don't like it I tell them though crap its my body I'm paying you and your here for me!!!!

    I was just about to say that :)
    @momofSOONtobe7
  • Lol @momofsoontobe7 I'm going to do that!!!
  • Good its your body your child and they are making money off of you or your insurance. You don't HAVE to keep that doctor. One lucky doctor that would be on call could get the money. Lol good luck!!!!
