Breast Feeding - Milk Supply Question

edited January 2012 in Breastfeeding
After trying extremely hard to Breast Feed my first, I failed :(
My Milk supply dried up by the third month.
She got two months out of me.
I was wondering if any of you had any special remedies or tips to enhance my Milk Supply for when this baby comes :)
I'm not due until April, but I want to be prepared. If I have to hunt down a tea, or a special fruit I will. lol
Thanks in advance

  • Mother's Milk tea works well if you're ok with a nasty tasting tea. Mother's Love More Milk Plus supplements work great as well. If you're having trouble with making enough because your breast's didn't grow much during pregnancy, then try taking Goats Rue 3 weeks before delivery...it make's your breast tissue grow so you'll be able to make more milk :)
  • Breast growth during pregnancy/size of breast has nothing to do with production/supply.
Nursing on demand, not supplementing with formula, not pumping and feeding with a bottle, and pacifiers in the first month will help tremendously.
Drinking Mother's Tea, taking herbs, drinking lots of water and eating a well balanced diet along with the nursing on demand will help a lot with production.
Herbs to take to help is fenugreek (also found in mother's tea) and blessed thistle (which you can find both combind in a pill) taken three times a day, three pills at a time (I think) will help up supply.

@Bahamamama2862 knows a lot that can help along with @ashleyfew

    Thanks!
I can tell you, with my first it was Breast Milk only! She fed all the time, and due too being tongue tied it hurt, but through nights of me balling my eyes out because of the pain I was so determined too do it this way, even turning too a nipple shield. It helped a ton with the pain, and I still got the feeling of us bonding. I don't recall changing anything too do with my diet, my mom was on top of me about it lol but then I started too become emptier and emptier. She started crying a lot, and tried to feed and pump and feed and pump but nothing :(
  • I actually like the mothers milk tea. I brew it strong and add truvia (sp) and I like it... I also take fenugreek (5 pills a day) and feed and pump everyday... (Well sometimes I skip pumping if I dont hurt to bad... lol)

If tongue tie was the issue, more than likely your next will have it. All 3 of mine did including myself. Getting it clipped after birth is your best bet. The nipple shield and not responding to the pump might have played a big part in supply.
Was there a reason for not getting lo's clipped? Just curious.
  • Curiosity is completely fine.
When my Midwife initially looked they didn't notice her being tongue tied. She had no heart shaped tongue and it didn't even go through my mind because no one in my family that I know of was ever tongue tied. Then one day on a midwife visit she looked into her mouth and pointed out that my daughter was actually mildly tongue tied but not enough that anything needed to be done about it. I was at a meeting with a nutritionist about a month ago and she told me that even being mildly tongue tied it can cause a lot of pain for a breast feeding mother, so I just assumed from then on that, that is why it hurt so much.
That's also good to know about the nipple shield. I did use it often for about a month. I would only use it when my nipple's got to the point of bleeding, and chapped, and then would stop when my nipples healed again... but they always chapped and became purple after 1-2 days of breast feeding without it. I was told by nurse's at the health clinic and my midwife that nothing ever appeared to be wrong with my daughter latch... I don't know though
I'm going to be getting them too look for it this time, and if it needs to be done i will get them too clip it. There is actually a lot of things I'm going to change this time around hahah including my labour and delivery experience.
