How long does it take for the umbilical cord to stop pulsing??

edited March 2011 in Giving birth
Just a curious question. :) I've heard it's better for the baby to wait.

  • U mean after the baby is born and before they cut it? I thought they cut it right away
Is it better to wait i am curious too lol never really thought about it does it bleed when it is cut?
  • I never thot about the pulsing, but I think about all that lifesaving blood n stem cells going to waste if u can't afford cord blood banking! I wish I could bank my baby's, I have two other kids and you just never know if it might save one of their lives one day!
  • I believe its around 15 minutes
  • How long after birth does it take for the placenta to deliver?
  • 15 minutes? Really? So would they clean the baby up in the room? I know I'd still be able to breast feed if I decided to wait but thats kind of creepy. Sorry if that offends people. So they wouldn't be able to pull the after birth and such out til after they cut it?
  • We are donating the cord blood. We cant afford to store it, but after thinking long and hard about it we dont want to throw it away either. Maybe our babys cord blood will save another baby out there.
  • @johan im not 100% sure if its really 15 minutes thats just what I've heard. This is my first pregnancy so I honestly don't know.
  • Lol. Mine to. Thank you tho. :)I think I'm gonna call the hospital monday morning to find out all the details. I'm really curious about this.
  • I never thought about this im gonna have a talk to my man find out what he thinks :-)

  • @homebirthadvocate- I know this may be a dumb question but is the placenta part of the afterbirth? And would the baby still be attached to me if I waited to cut the cord? I want to try to give my baby every bit of goodness I can but my hubby is kinda creeped out by some things. Lol.

  • Well I talked with my hubby about it last night and he agrees that whatever is good for the baby is worth it. :) I think he was expecting it to be all gross and such. He doesn't really want to cut the cord tho. Lol. Which is fine with me. As long as he's in the room with me and will back up my decisions to the dr and other staff.
  • I didn't no u could donate cord blood I'm going Tu need more info on this....
  • @neek- I'm just learning about all of this too. I never knew there were so many different things to think about for birth.
  • Yea now I'm wondering about all the things tht have not been mentioned to me...@jojom
  • @neek- I've learned alot on here and on some natural birthing websites. Also my sister is friends with some doulas in washington so she gives me tons of advice too. I didn't even know about writing a birth plan until a month or so ago. Some of my family and in laws think I'm crazy for doing the birth plan and such but I don't care. I'm doing things my way. :D
  • @jojom wait..... what is a birth plan.... my doctors do not mention anything Tu me.....
  • @neek- lol. It's where you make a list of all the things you want to happen in labor and birth. Pain management, what you want to happen if you need to be induced, circumcision if your having a boy, who you want in the room, if tug want the baby to start in the rom with you, etc. go to www.birthingnaturally.net and look up birth planning. they even have sample plans.
