bad reaction to prenatal vitamins.

edited March 2011 in Health
So ever since I've been taking the prenatal vitamins I've been getting super sick. At first I thought it was morning sickness. Then maybe a flu bug but seriously wouldn't go away. Hurt tummy belly aches super bad throwing up none stop. Doc. Looked for gullstones and other things acid reflex nothing was working. Long story short I quit taking my vitamins and no longer sick and cab eat and hold food down! Not taking them anymore! So I know I've seen other suggestions on here. What should I take to replace the prenatals?

  • Try a supplement for additional follic acid and two children's gummies my nutritionist said pills may be hard to take for now.
  • I have the same reaction):
  • Take them at night right before you go to bed.
  • Did you try a different brand of prenatals? I had been taking this one since before I got pregnant and just continued to use it. I had bad morning sickness and finally found out that a big part of it was my pills. The iron in it was making me sick so I switched to the gummy prenatals and those have been amazing! Maybe try gummies before giving them up they are much easier on the stomach. If those fail you can go to childrens flinstone vitamins (or similure) and take a follic acid pill.
  • Maybe switch brands? My doc gave me a whole bunch of samples and said that some might make me sick, but to pick which one I liked best and they would prescribe them. I stuck to my Walmart ones cause I didn't wanna even risk getting sick.

  • You should look for prenatals that are "while food" because they shouldn't have any synthetic vitamins in them And are food based. If you have a local health food store it would be a good place to start. If the vitamins turn your pee yellow you aren't absorbing them enough anyway and whole food is the way to go.
  • @ghettobetty I got my prenatal gummies from Target they weren't even that pricy. Can you buy them on your own or does medicaid want you to get them through your doctor? I'm sorry I don't know exactly how medicaid works
  • Im on medicaid too and haven't been able to take my prenatals entire pregnancy. Im 27 weeks now. Prenatal gummies are expensive, i've been trying to get all my nutritional needs through my diet. I eat a lot of cereal, it has more of what i need in it. Dr says baby looks fine.
  • My pee has been kind of orange yellow weird. I can just buy them Medicaid wont pay but I don't care as long as their nit over $30.00
  • @ghettobetty they were 20 or less at Target. I can't remember the exact price. With the first ones I took they actually turned my pee green lol eww I know. The gummies have been amazing and are worth a try.
  • Thanks! This is my third and with my first didn't take anything was 15hid pregnancy and with 2nd took them had no problem but they were. Different wish I remembered what they were its been 5 years though.
  • Walmart has gummies for 12 bucks.
  • Were they prescription or over the counter? I can't take over the counter ones cuz they made me sick but my doctor wrote a prescription and I have no prob with those.

  • The ones that caused the bad reaction were prescription.
  • I quit taking mine. I cannot stand the fish taste, its just disgusting.
  • I had the same problem with the prenatal vitamins. I take Flinstones chewable, folic acid, and a Calcium with Vit D. Milk and cheese made me sick early on, so that is why I started with the calcium. The Vit D helps your body absorb the calcium.
Also, listen to your cravings, and talk to your doctor about them. That will give you a clue if you need anything in your diet.
  • Yea my body was not wanting meat at all and craving potatoes... now hopefully I can go back to a more balanced diet. Feeling so much better sine I stopped taking them!
  • Im the same way. but is it ok if I don't take my prenatals? Juz curious
  • I didn't with my first but not sure. I'm going to try folic acid pills and vitamins or over the counter first before I give up completely.
  • I would try the off the shelfs at Walmart. They are made by spring valley and are in a green bottle. They were like 4 or $5. Its
  • @ghettobetty. Take 2 flinstones chewables childrens vitamins and a folic acid vitamin. I can't take prenatals either....Really upset my stomach!
