Throwing your own baby shower?

edited April 2011 in Baby showers
Just a general question. I've read a lot of posts about people throwing their own baby shower? Is this common? I realize people do things differently in different states or areas, but this was new to me. Where I live you would never throw your own but rather a friend/relative would host it for you. So ladies....is this common where you live and how about wedding showers? Same thing?

  • Hmm my family is huge. Over 40+ first cousins n 30 lil nieces n nephews. When my sister had her babyshower, I host it but I couldnt afford everything on my own so my sister n mom helped pay. She had so many gifts, diapers that last her six months down the line n wipes. N about 3 grand in cash. It was a success lol.
  • Well I have my two friends to host and throw my baby shower and it isn't customary to throw your own....but I am a very hands on person and I like things the way I like them I am an online shopper as well and I can find anything online if given enough time so even though my friends are hosting I plan on doing most of the planning with them because I want a Diva like affair to go on....even though I'm having a little prince

  • My family and church threw me bridal shower, and will be planning my baby shower. I'll prob a a total of 3....my husband family, my family, and my church.
  • Jenn_929 ur too funny lol.
  • Im throwing my own. With my first it was thrown by my mother in law and supposed to be a suprise.....FAIL! Lol she had everyone so confused and had a very tiny cake with tons of people, not enough food at all, and no actual baby shower games! Lol me and my husband didn't even get to eat because everyone was already eating before we got there, this time we are planning it ourselves and its this Saturday! :D
  • I dont see anything wrong with throwing your own shower, its just a gathering, and you get to do whatever u want... Its like having a birthday party "hey im having a bday party, come party with me" its just a time to come together
  • I'm throwing my own because I want things done my way and if its not, the only person I can get upset with is myself. My friends and sister is helping though.
  • My stepmom is throwing mine
  • well all my friends.left me since I got peggos but my mom n lil sistah is throwing me one I just cant make up my mind about the date
  • I don't think it's common (or tactful) to throw yourself a baby shower where you ask for gifts. I am throwing my own "shower," but I'm specifying not to bring gifts (though I might request that people bring diapers). Really, I'm having a picnic that will have baby related food and a cake simply because I like parties and babies are exciting. For my first my mom "hosted" the shower, but she and I planned it together and I bought the cake, the food, the decoations, and had it at my house.
  • I wouldn't throw my own bcuz its expensive I would b better off buying everything myself... my mom n sis will b throwing me one but I would like to have a say on everything but please don't surprise me I'll b upset [-(
  • I threw my first only because no one took the initiative in my family. And I don't have friends that think they spur ne doing that especially if they didn't have kids. This time I am too. It doesn't really matter to me cuz I'm not waiting til I'm 8 1/2 months before someone else says " hey I would have helped." Whatever I can do it.;-)
  • I dont see ne thg wrong with throwing ur own. All my girlfriends from church are pitching in to do my last babyshowet and 2 of my bffs are hosting. It wouldve been a surprise but i hate surprises, plus i have special requests for the food n appetizerd becuz my cravings, lol. I dont want a cake i want flan. There HAS TO BE PICKLES, LOTS OF THEM. Lol. N no monkey decorations!! Im being a brat since its my last baby
  • I have never had a babyshower. I say don't throw a shower for yourself just go buy the things you need for your baby.
  • Me my hubby and a friend of mine is throwing my baby shower.
  • I let my brothes girl friend throw me a shower for my first baby, and it sucked so bad no one showed up so I had to have my bro and bd bring there friends just to play games, so since its been 5 years im helping with this one, its a bbq baby shower at a park, so that everyone can have fun and bring there kids
  • Thanks for the responses girls! I can't wait to have a shower! I'm only 8w5d now. @MrsThompson34 That is awesome! You have a huge family & that shower was for sure a success!
@jenn_929 I am still laughing my ass off at your comment :-))
  • I threw my first one because no one else would:( Didnt spent alot, had tons of fun and got some nesting done by making lots of godies lol:)
  • I don't think it has to do with where you come from. It's a personal choice. I moved to Fl away from my family and friends. We have family and friends in Fl however I felt more comfortable doing my own shower. My parents and sister in law helped pay for it and flew in for it. I plan on doing my own shower again
