My OB clinic almost killed me...

A while back, I posted how I was getting terrible, 2nd rate care from the Conemaugh Women's Clinic, where I was being forced to go due to having state health insurance + being high risk. I recently got away from them after writing a heartfelt letter to my old OB explaining how crappy my care was. She had no idea it was so bad at the clinic, & even though her practice doesn't usually take on high-risk pregnancies, she discussed it with the other OB's in her office & they took on my case.

Thirty minutes into my appointment, from the very SAME medical records the clinic had, they discovered that in 2009, after my second miscarriage, my family doctor had genetic testing done on me. I have two different mutations, one is "Factor 5," that makes me prone to throw blood clots. Seven months with the clinic, & this same information was at their fingertips, & they either never read it, or overlooked it. I should have been on blood thinner shots from the very beginning of my pregnancy.

I had a feeling, heavy & terrible, that if I didn't get away from the clinic something bad was going to happen. Everyone said it was "pregnancy paranoia." Ladies, listen to your instincts when they tell you something is wrong, no matter what anyone else says!

I've had a bunch of testing done with my current OB, & the baby looks unaffected thus far. I now must give myself a shot a day in my stomach of Lovenox until 6 weeks after I deliver my baby girl. As long as she's healthy, this momma is happy, & I'll do whatever I must to make sure she stays healthy! :)

I'm now with a group of OB's who talk to me & ask/answer questions, they test my urine, measure my belly, & monitor me closely - none of which was being done at the clinic. I could have lost my baby or my life from their incompetence. Always, always, always stand up for yourself with your doctors, get away from them if something doesn't feel right, & follow your mommy instincts! Listen to your heart, because no one knows our bodies like we do! Just wanted to share my story...

  • Gurl sue they aspects
  • Wow, thanks for sharing your experience! I'm a ftm so I have no clue what I should be expecting but I now know some things to look for!
  • Get them shut down cuz if they doin it to u they messing with someone elses life
  • Wow thats crazy. I feel the same way about my clinic, its not as good as my old ob/gyn. But the clinic I go to isnt that bad, thet measure and take urine where I go.
  • My sister and my mom have factor 5 blood clotting disease too, and you are one lucky girl! Kudos to you for your persistence, and following your gut!
  • Family & friends have all told me I should sue. I'm thinking about at least having a consultation with a medical malpractice attorney & talking with our local news station, too. Maybe they'd want to do an investigative report. I have three friends who lost their babies while under the clinic's "care," & the most important thing for me at this point is to expose what they're doing to the public, or even shut them down. I don't want any other women & their babies suffering because of that hellhole! @zexy4da011
  • I'm glad to hear you are getting the proper care you need.
  • Omg u have to do something.there has to be a lawyer that will help u.
  • I was kind of in a situation like that I have a placenta insufficiency where blood flow to the umbelical cord slowly stops my OB that I had with ny daughter failed to tell ne close to the end, my daughter hadn't moved in 12 hrs my OB told me to take some tylenol & lay down if she hadn't moved in the morning to call & let her know well I called she never answered I went to the er they knew immediately that there was something wrong I was rushed to have an emergency c-section my daughter was born 4 weeks 1 day early severely anemic & was rushed to st marys 2 hrs away & was in the NICU for 3 1/2 weeks they told me if I had waited even an hour later I wouldn't have her, then my OB had the audacity to tell the staff that she told me to come in the night before if I could have gotten out of bed I would have put her in the hospital I had some severe recovery problems because of her negligence, so yes ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS listen to your instincts! God bless each of you & your pregnancies I hope & pray no one has to go through what I did!
  • Wow..unbeliavable how you were treated..that's awful. I'm so glad to hear you were strong enough to listen to yourself! Congrates on your little one and try to rest easy tonight knowing you have proper medical care for baby and yourself, I know I will :)
  • I too am on Lovenox. I have to do 2 injections daily of .3 (30), they are starting to hurt; a lot. All I can do to get myself to do them is tell myself every single time is that its for the best for the baby & for me. Hugs!
  • You should definitely sue! If you go to the paper just make sure that you can't get in trouble for slander. Thank goodness you left them! I'm so glad to hear that you're being taken care of and taken seriously! :)
  • Or is it libel? I always get them mixed up.
  • @MomOfThree: Thank you for sharing your story, too. I teared up when I read that. If we can inspire just one woman to follow her instincts & get herself checked out in the face of doubt, & even her OB saying not to worry, we've done our job! :)

@momtob: Aww...thank you, & everyone for all the love & support! My Pregly ladies are the BEST! :D
This baby girl means the world to me, as I've lost two to miscarriage & have a plethora of health issues. I was beginning to think I would never be a mom, as my doctors had predicted long ago. She's my miracle, & I'll walk through fire for her, now & always! <3
  • I was going to a similar type clinic in my first trimester. I didn't have an ob/gyn because I didn't have insurance, so I went there because they set up Medicaid for you. Anyway, they weren't awful, but I felt like just another case number. So I found I small midwife practice and couldn't be happier :) it's true, trust your gut!!!
  • That's horrible! I'm happy you have proper care now :)

So I should listen to my gut about the epidural huh then
  • @magcaw: I'll definitely consult with an attorney before talking to anyone in the news. I don't want to do anything foolish, but I do feel a moral obligation to get the word out there somehow. I just want to spare any other moms the stress & heartache that myself & others I know have been through thanks to that place. Thank you for being there for me with this issue, as you were on my last post about the clinic! :)
  • You are an amazing woman and so strong to keep going. I agree all to often things are dismissed and thought to be paranoia but in a lot of cases this is not true. Get your story out to who ever will listen because it could save lifes!
  • @MrsDelRae: I have to do one shot, & it's a .6 (60). Does the Lovenox burn you when it's injected? I just had my first shot last night, I couldn't do it myself & made my boyfriend inject me. Lol! I tried, but I totally wussed out. I'm gonna try again tonight, but I swear that crap burned for 15 minutes under my skin! :(
  • @ProudMomma: What is your gut telling you about the epidural? I say, read up & absorb all the medical facts, then take a few days to meditate on the issue. Whatever your instincts are telling you to do, go with it! :)

@wallieheadbaby3: You are SO sweet, & thank you for saying I'm a strong woman. I try to be. I'll be smart about it, but I will find a way to make sure the women in this town are informed about what goes on at the clinic.
  • I remember your previous post. Glad you updated us. That is terrible. I was going to the health unit when I first got Preg and on medicaid. Once I got my blue cross I switched back to my reg obgyn. I hated the health unit. They were always in a rush. The had me thinking for about 5 minutes that I had HIV due to a false positive test. Finally told me the more accurate diagnostic test showed I did not have HIV. I couldn't get out of that clinic fast enough. So glad I finally got blue cross ins.
  • @artistmamma I completely agree I'm so glad you followed your instincts!
  • Girl I'm so glad u will still be here AND so will ur little angel Sue the sh*t out of them if they can do it to u they can for it to others if u don't Sue at least turn them in to the state
  • Yes, it burns, it causes bruises too :( I have been on blood thinners for almost 2 years; but I was on Warfarin pills. I had injections in the hospital for awhile, then I was switched to the pills. Now I am on the injections until 2 months after I give birth (may have to be longer; if not permanently due to my other medications possibly having interactions) I literally BEGGED my hubby to do the first one for me; but I had to swear if he did it the first time I HAD to do them myself from then on. I have some pretty nasty bruises on my belly from them. Be VERY careful what you eat while on blood thinners; I can't stress that enough. Things you don't even think about can have massive effects on your blood. You & baby are in my best wishes. The things we go thru for our babies :)
  • @MrsDelRae: Oh my gosh, I'm SO sorry you're going through this, too. It's only my second night, & once again, I couldn't bring myself to do it. But it hurt even worse this time & stung for over 30 minutes after the shot was injected. It seems like a lot of medicine is in those needles! :(
I know you're very busy, but I have three questions: 1 - Do I absolutely have to inject in my belly & nowhere else? 2 - What foods should I be avoiding, because no one ever mentioned food restrictions to me? 3 - Do you know if it's safe to breast feed while on these shots?
If you get the time & can answer, I appreciate it. And man, I hope you don't have to do these shots any longer than absolutely necessary. Best wishes to you, hun! :)
  • It's not a hassle to ask me questions; that is part of why I am here :)

Make sure you don't do them in the same spot twice, go lower/higher/switch sides. You HAVE to do them in your tummy, the way the medicine is absorbed it has to be thru abdominal muscles. It sucks, I know. Yes, you can nurse while using them :) Make sure you pinch a 'flap' of skin while injecting, keeping it pinched until the needle is out of your skin. I will look for my list & see if I missed anything.

  • Is this in PA near Altoona/Johnstown?
  • They usually do a run down on ur medical history..y didn't u tell dem of ur mc and watever other medical problems? @artistmamma
  • @MrsDelRae: Thank you SO much! I'm on my phone right now, but I'm gonna get on my computer tomorrow & print this out so I have it as a reference.
I'm having a hard time pinching a flap of skin to inject into because my belly is so stretched out & tight. I'm gonna try the lower part of my stomach next time, as I'm carrying high & there should be more fattiness to pinch beneath where my baby is! Haha!
I saw a warning about Lovenox & epidurals so I'm going to discuss with my OB if being on these injections means I cannot have one now. I was told I have a slim chance of delivering naturally & will most likely end up with a c-section, but I need to know all the risks involved. The specialist I saw was supposed to give me a booklet explaining risks/benefits & side effects, but all it contained was an injection schedule & how-to self inject guide.
    Thank you again! :D
  • My OB told me if an epidural is wanted, it will have to be a minimum of 24 hours from the last injection; also depending on amount you are on. They will give you an INR to check the blood clotting factor before they give you a final answer. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.
