amnio???

What do u ladies think about amnios late in pregnancy???

Like 37-38 wks, my dr wants me to have one to see if my daughters lungs are fully developed so we can induce early. We're inducing early so my kidneys do not fail during labor or delivery. What do u lady think??

  • Well this far along is probably alot safer than early in pregnancy. You wont miscarry. Worst it can do is put you in labor, wich at this point you're almost there.
  • @Strep_due_101611 yea that's very true!! I think it will make me feel better knowing she's fully developed so I wont feel like im harming her by having hear early. Im just worried about them poking her with the needle because she loves kicking everything the dr sticks on my stomach just inagen sticking something in it.
  • Well they use an u/s to make sure they don't poke the baby. They look at what they're doing.
  • P.S. the name is steph not strep
  • @steph _due_101611 yea I typed that but my phone thinks it should auto correct everything. It drives me nuts!! Im glad the use an u/s because my little girl loves kicking everything!!
  • Im sorry, my phones being retarded. I might never get ur name right
  • Lol its ok. Only thing bad about spelling it wrong is i don't get the notification
  • I say do it. Its for your health and the risks are lower then.
  • @steph_due_101611 I think I got it this time!

@grnfish73 - yea I agree, I think the early risks are still scaring me. I just wanna do the best thing for her.
  • @kansasmomma I have the same decision to make by tomorrow. My doc told me there is a 1 in about 300 chance of something going wrong. Miscarriage is still possible. ( I think they may use another term this far in pregnancy tho) I dont know what im going to choose the odds r slim but if sonething did go wrong could I live with myself knowing that I had the choice to do this or not?? So far leaning towards not doing it.
  • The only risks as far as I know for a late term amnio is that labor could start, your water could break, or baby could be poked. That needle is so small though that it wouldn't be very detrimental unless they hit an eyeball or something, which you would have to have a very incompetent dr to make that mistake. I also read an article that said the rate of miscarrige from amnio hasn't been studied in close to a decade and because of how many are now performed and how long docs have been doing them that the actuall miscarrige rate is now closer to 1in1000 vs. 1in300.
  • Hmm thats good to know..i was just going by the stats mt doc gave me
  • @kaylin how far along are you?? It is a tough decision in the beginning of the pregnancy but I think its easy towards the end because the risk does decrease just like@ rockinmomma said. I still haven't decided what to do yet, I need to talk to.my fiancee more about it
  • @kansasmomma im 36 weeks I have a c section scheduled in 18 days ill b 38 weeks 5 days. We would b testin for lung development for me to go sooner. Only based on my discomfort abd sever numbing in my legs and hips. Im not high risk or anything. So I kinda feel selfish if I do it.
  • @kaylin it was just an article I read, so don't take my word for it ;)
  • @kansasmomma ur situiation is different...ur health is on the line. So make sure u take that into consideration...
  • @kaylin I feel selfish for making the decision for my health but I also want my baby girl to grow up with a momma. Its a tough decision cause I want to put my child first no matter what. I have a great dr so I think I will do it but im still scared to hurt my baby girl. How long have u had the numb legs and hip pain. I bet that is so annoying!
  • @kansasmomma For a while now :( makes working difficult. I dont think ur being selfish at all. Urs r sever medical reasons. U r doing the best interest for her...u will b a great mom to her. When will u have this done?
  • Thank you very much!! Im a first time momma so im kinda nervous and excited at the same time! I'll probably have it done next monday! Oh you working through it. Ur one tough mom! I have been on bed rest since 20 weeks so im being super lazy.
  • @kansasmomma sorry to hear ur on bed rest for so long..i think id go crazy lol...but I could use a day or two of rest lol. I still work 40+ hrs a week and just trying to hang on..17 more days...when is ur due date?
  • I had am amnio 1 week ago and im 20 weeks. My baby actually grabbed the needle while it was in there!!!! But its not a needle once they put it in there. Its more like a straw so it wont hurt him/her!
  • @kaylin wow im not sure how u work 49+ hrs a week. With how uncomfortable I am and the pelvic pn im having I couldn't do.it!! Its awesome that u still do!! Im do june 14 but we're having a induction date some time next week or the one after!! When's ur due date??
  • @bigbelly wow he grabbed the tub! That's scary and really interesting. Did he pull it or hold on to it for a long time?? Did the amnio hurt or did the numbing Meds just hurt more!!
  • @kansasmomma im havin a c section on july 3. I just got back from the doc. I opt not to have the amino done. (remember mine was to go early due to pain not true medical reasons) I fugure ill just try to hang on..only 17 more days....i can do it...( I think)
  • @kaylin oh my ur in a lot of pain though. I feel bad for u. It would be nice if they could do something to relieve the pain since u have to wait longer. I hope ur numbness and pain ease up a little or alot! I can't decided when to have my amnio and when to have my baby girl. 37 or 38 weeks. I want to have her sooner than later so I can hold her sooner! I know its better to keep her baking longer but im ready to have her!!
  • @kansasmomma the baby was trying like hell to get it but don't think it could get a hold of it. And yes I think the amnio hurt! They didn't numb me at all. They just cleaned my belly off with iodine type stuff. But it only lasts for about 60 seconds. Its waiting to get it done that is the hard part. But I do think it hurts!
  • if your dr. say its good i would but what is 2 more wks of waiting.. is your condition deadly..
  • I would feel safe at 38 wks... I would skip the amnio. Have you had an u/s lately. There really isn't anywhere I'd feel safe sticking a needle. No matter how good my dr is. I would just get scheduled at like 38 wks and 2-3 days.
  • @bigbelly oh that makes me want to avoid an amnio at all cost. I don't mind needle but if they don't numb my tummy i'll cry! Like @mommyof4girls said I think i'll get induced around 38weeks and skip the amnio. Im high risk enough that I don't want to take any more risk.

@lea3 I have lupus nephritus which labor and delivery could cause my kidneys to fail which is deadly. I want to live a ling life and enjoy my baby girls life with her!!

Thank you all for ur advice!!
  • I honestly didn't think the amnio hurt at all! Less than a blood draw. I was actually very shocked by how much it didn't hurt lol. Everyone has different pain tolerence though. It is a super quick procedure which is awesome because it is pretty nerve racking.
