i want to exclusively pump! need advice

edited May 2011 in Breastfeeding
I want to only use a breastpump to get my milk out. I read some articles that said kit was hard. I will breastfeed the first few days to give baby colostrum. But I want only pump my milk after that. Has anyone ever done that? I have extremely sensitive nipples an cannot even sleep without a bra, even without being preggo!

My baby has been in nicu for 31 days. I been pumping continuously. It makes your nipples just as sore as breastfeeding. I wana scream the first few minutes I turn the pump on. Just started actually breastfeeding her few days ago. So much easier. Pumping is a pain in the butt. You have to set the alarm in the middle of night to wake up and pump. I just wana cry when I hear the alarm. 12am 3am 6am up pumping. Much rather have a baby on the boob than machine. Good luck. Message me if you have questions when the time comes. Im now a pumping expert. Lol

This is a good question. My first two wouldn't latch on so I gave up and Just formula feed. So I too was just thinking of pumping. Moneys so tight we won't be able to formula feed. But I'm scared she wont latch on :( we need more in put on this post @bee726
  • We must be the only moms out there wanting to strictly pump?
  • I want to, well I am gonna just pump ( & formula feed ) I don't know how its gonna turn out but that's my plan as well
  • Ure not the only one. I want to only pump also. Hope its not impossible.
  • I have been thinking of doing the same thing, I don't know if I could handle 2 at once. Though I have no experience....or knowledge on it
  • I strictly pumped with my first. I plan on doing it again with this one. It was very time consuming, I'd feed my daughter, then pump, then change her and then I'd be ready to start the whole process over again! And my husband was in Iraq so I was doing it all by myself. It all depends on how devoted you are to it! It's definitely doable. I had a ton of people tell me I was crazy and I should just breastfeed but I wasn't comfortable with that and I did it my way. I have no regrets!! Your nipples will be sore no matter what though, sorry. My milk never fully came in though and I dried up after 7 weeks. I had a couple issues though and I had an emergency c section at 35 weeks so I really think that might have had something to do with it.
  • Also, I did supplement with formula.

  • I remember pumping being more a painfull then actual feeding. When you pick your crying newborn you breast have a natural let down pumps can take quite a few suck before the milk starts flowing. Sometime hearing baby cry can cause you to spring a leak. This time I plan to pump and feed him myself when I am home. I will need to pump all the milk I can since I have to go right back to work.
  • @homebirthadvocate any tips on being able to pump enough so I don't have to supplement? See above post for info :)
  • @soontohavethree have u tried a nipple shield? U can buy them at target for cheap. Medela makes them. There a rubber nipple thing that you put over your nipple to help babies latch on easier. I had trouble until the hospital gave me one and it worked wonders!
  • @kayleigh27 A nipple shield? Ive never heard of one! Gezz sometimes I think this is my first baby and not my third ;) LOL always learning things :) I will dif. look into those. Thanks! Is that something you can reuse??
  • I just had my baby 3 weeks ago he won't latch to my breast;:/ so I am pump time consuming but I well I plan on buy a nipple shield this week

  • @soontohavethree yep you can just rinse and reuse. Its about 5 dollars at target but I got mine from the hospital so I would ask the lactation specialist if they have any
  • @homebirthadvocate is breastfeeding with twins really are scary and I am thinking its going to be? Do you know?
  • @homebirthadvocate thanks that is great advice! Pump at my job is not at all possible because I work in a resturant. Although I usually work 5 hour shifts and my apartment is only 5 mins away. So how long do you pump for at a time I can t remember that at all.

  • @homebirthadvocate I should of known thanks for refreshing my memory it seems like you forget everything in 4 years.
  • My last baby was born 1 month early & her palate was undeveloped so she could not latch on. I had to pump for 30 days & on the 31st day, she latched on. My supply actually dropped because she used less than I pumped! But, I pumped every two hours for 15 minutes each breast! No exceptions. I feel because of my determination & my consistancy I had even more of a supply than I would have had if she would have eaten from the tap, but that was what happend to me in that situation. I hope it helps, I think breastfeeding is the best most natural thing for babies no matter how they get it! Good luck & if u want, u can inbox me with any questions.
  • So I found that reading the reviews on breast pumps helps with this topic. I just read a review on amazon on the philips scent isis duo and I clicked on reviews then clicked on newest first and I read a review saying she has been exclusively pumping since day 1 of having baby!!! Wow! Go check it out @soontohavethree @salsabia @marriedwith_4
  • I think there is a laws thats states your employer has to provide you with a place and time to pump when you return to work @socalmomma
  • @rissalee7 really I should look into that there is just no where there besides a restroom which doesn't sound to nice. The office has cameras the break room has no door. :(
  • @socalmomma definetly look into it my old work place had two rooms with rockin chair and tv for mom to pump at work
