Potty training a boy - the 'fun' has started, tips please!

edited June 2011 in Pregnant
:-< ~X( uuuuuuuhhhh I hate potty training... he's actually doing pretty good, but his biggest problem at this point is 'releasing' his pee. I could just really use any and all tips from those with experience, regarding any aspect of the process... no tip is too small or obvious ;) Any little secrets or tips or methods will do... just wanting to keep my mind open to all kinds of ideas and perspectives! Thanks in advance!

  • put cheerios in the bowl and tell him to aim,
  • I started my son sitting down pushing his penis down and closing his knees. Aiming to me was the hardest part. Once he got sitting down, I had him stand on a stool and push it down. Now he doesn't even want me in the bathroom with him.
  • All my sons have freaked out if I touch their penises! My oldest son used to yell--in public bathrooms, mind you--"no mommy! don't touch me there!" while I was changing his diaper. He was two when I potty trained him (thankfully; if he'd been in diapers any longer someone probably would have called cps), and I told him that 1. he wouldn't get any more diaper rashes if he used the potty and 2. he would get a special treat if he peed, and an even bigger special treat if he pooped. He was actually quite easy. My youngest is 2 1/2 and we're just starting with him. For now I'm just trying to get him used to sitting on the potty a couple of times a day, and I usually run the water in the sink. He isn't as verbally advanced as my oldest, so I can't bribe him as easily. He LOVES potty time so far, though! :) My step-son's mom liked the "running around naked" method. It resulted in some nasty messes, but that worked for him after a week or so.
  • I got my 3 year old potty trained with candy lol! Everytime he went #1 He got 1 m&m and #2 he got 2.. now with my 2 year old its not working! He is so not intrested! :-/
  • Good luck!! Mines was extra stubborn. I got a potty seat that had a boy guard so he didn't pee all over the floor. I started him sitting. And you HAVE to be consistent. Take him every hour even if he doesn't have to go. Buy underwear with his face character on it and tell him that the character will be upset if you pee on them. Also don't give them much to drink. So that they won't have accidents before you take them again.
  • @sands3 oh that's a good idea! I have to have him sit, otherwise he tries to just walk away and I wind up pushing it down for him cuz he doesn't get it, but using his legs could be a really good way to help him do it on his own! Thanks! :)
  • @magcaw LOL, literally. 'no mommy! Don't touch me there!' I'm sure that was dreadful, but I appreciate you sharing so I could get a good laugh! :D We have him running around in just undies... so we're cleaning up lots of accidents, but it's nice to hear that method only took a week or so with your stepson! Mine gets diaper rushes easily, so I think I'll see if he understands that as a reason. Thanks for your help!
  • @smgibbs thanks! My son is 2 and he's like your 2 year old - not so much interested in the reward! :-?? Maybe I should downgrade to m&m's, though... we're going with mini cookies and now he knows we have them so he keeps asking for them, but doesn't want to potty first. Ugh.
  • @jcmommy I love that - tell him Mickey or McQueen or whoever he's wearing doesn't want to get wet! Thank you! :D
  • Everyone - I really appreciate all your input and advice! I knew it would be difficult, but I'm not patient by nature, so... ;) This all helps, though and gives me hope! Thank you, thank you!!
  • @bensMama my older son use to beg for some candy when he didn't pee too. We kept them high in a jar in the bathroom. You just have to put your foot down. Trust me I gave in alot but after I just said no.. he would go pee Like every 2 sec just to get the candy lol
  • I'm in the process of potty training my son
  • For my son I had a male family member show him the ropes. Since his dad wasnt around, my grandpa and my one friend would help by taking him to the bathroom. Not like flashing them but standing and peeing. They'd go in the big potty and he'd use his little fisher price one. He got praised and felt like a big boy. I also used cheerios for aim, real underwear so he'd feel the wetness. :) good luck
  • It depends on how old he is. I potty trained my son when he was 2 and we had to start with sitting now he strands and has been completely potty trained for about a yr. Cheerios don't seem to work with little ones cause its hard to keep control n u end up with pee everywhere lol..but sitting is good to start. U have to keep on them about it at first until its a routine ask him every 5 to 10 minutes. Id start with pullups too because its a new step for them and its showing they r a big boy now and then. He can put it on himself. Also don't be suprised if its a little too early. My son wasn't quite ready at first so we cvame back a few months later and a lightbulb clicked and he got it.
