Hospital Costs

edited June 2011 in First time moms
Hey ladies, i'm hoping some of you Mom's who already have children can help me out. My job is switching insurance companies and instead of having a $500 deductible they are going to a $3500 deductible. I've never been hospitalized before so I don't know a lot about how insurance works so my question is if I choose to keep my company's insurance, does that mean I will have to pay $3500 out of pocket before insurance kicks in?

  • I'm not really sure but I believe its ur annual deductible

  • Yep. You have to pay the deductable before they cough up anything. 3500 seems high but its better than having no insurance! R your premiums going down?

  • They are switching to Blue Cross and chose a crappy plan to save the county money (I work for the government)
  • I could be wrong but I remember when we went with hubbys work insurance (couple years ago diff job) they had like a 1,500 dollar deductible and it turned out WE had to reach that/out of pocket before they paid a thing
  • Well I don't pay any premium...but it would be cheaper to add myself to my hubby's insurance and pay $120/ month premium to only have a $500 deductible. $3500 is crazy!
  • Well thanks everyone for clarifying this for me!
  • I woould def switch too... 3500 sucks lol
  • Thats actually high you should switch if you can. is flex spending offered to you? Its your money taken out of your pay check pre tax to help pay for your out of pocket medical expenses. Covers things like co pays over the counter drugs contacts stuff like that.
  • Call the insurance to find out exactly what needs to come out of your pocket for maternity inpatient hospitalization. I have a deductible of $1750 but for inpatient hospitalization I only have to pay a copay of $250.
  • Yeah, you really need to call your insurance company and ask them. Last time our insurance through my husband's work covered everything...I literally paid one $15 copay to have my daughter. This time, the insurance that we started with paid like 10% of every appt and I was paying the rest of of pocket up to $1500, but they covered all of my daughter's 5 yr check up. Make sure your hubby's insurance will cover your pregnancy if you decide to switch, some companies consider pregnancy a pre existing condition and won't cover it.
  • There is a law signed in the mid 90's that says pregnancy cannot be considered a pre existing condition
  • Probably my deductible is 1500 I think but I think going to the doctors paying copays I already statisfied 300 of it..maybe IRS works that way?
  • *urs. Lol stupid predicted text

If you qualify for medicaid then you can get it as a secondary insurance and medicaid will cover the deductibles, copays, any left overs from your primary insurance.
