edited June 2011 in Health
Ok so a little history my last pregnancy I told my drs how I felt sick all the time and I felt like I was diabetic and they gave me my 1hr and I failed and then my 3hr and passed.my son was born 10lbs and I know I was diabetic.this pregnancy same things started happening and they gave me a 1hr early in my pregnancy and I passed then had my 1hr again when I was suppled to and failed. I took my 3hr and failed.I saw a endroconoligist(sry spelled wrong) and I have a monitor and have to check my blood 7xs a day.dr said he wanted to monitor it for 3wks till my nxt appt and I've been writing down all my levels and he said he didn't want me over 120 and everytime I eat I go over 130.they didn't give me a diet plan or anything.I don't know what to eat.im trying to find things that say they don't have alot of sugar but then I eat and my level is above 130.I don't know what to do.I was hopeing for maybe some advice from you ladies you have GD or any suggestions on what I can eat.im not allowed to eat alot of food,I have allergies and I am a picky eater so options are limited.I cant have anything with seeds, tomatoe sauce, corn, peaches, plums, oranges and im allergic to all nuts.thank you ladies in advance:)

  • Watch your carbs. Carbs=sugar. Also drink lots of water. If you google gestational diabetes diet a lot of helpful sites will pop up. Good luck! :)
  • @rockinmomma thank you.I didn't even think about carbs I've been buying stuff just looking at the sugar content.im a going to start goggling now:)

    Yes carbs are sneaky sugars but sugars none the less. Gluten free will be your friend!
  • yelp, them carbs will make ur sugar levels high.. meat is ur friend :) .. i drink water with the little sugarless flavor packets, anything else makes my sugar really high .. i tried the diet and the pills and neither works so i have to take shots before meals and at night. i HOPE you dont have to take the shots. they really suck.. my dr says 60 carbs per meals. maybe you could try that..
  • When I had it my midwife put me on a regulated carb diet. I had to eat 30 carbs for breakfast (no small feat to keep it in range), 45 for lunch, and 60 for dinner plus 3, 15 carbohydrate snacks. Each meal and snack had to include protien. I ended up eating ALOT of turkey bacon or cheese as part of a snack.
  • @rockinmomma im going to look into gluten free I had no idea about that.thank you so much.
  • @Ittybitty im big on boneless skinless chicken breast and steak I just have to be careful with my fat intake I had my gallbladder removed and if I eat too much fat I get diarrhea (sry tmi) I don't want shots:( this finger stuff is killing me already.my fingers hurt:( of course ill do whatever I have to bc im terrified for my baby and this is really a huge wake up call for me to take better care of myself. My dr didn't tell me about carbs or anything.thank you so much for your help.im going to ask them #1 why didn't they tell me about this and see how many cards they suggest per meal.thank you again.
  • @blissmarie23 my dr and endroconoligist suggested nothing.my dr just kept saying don't worry u and baby r fine.im freaking bc if my last was 10lbs and the nurse had to jump on me and push him out if im diabetic now how big will this baby be? Turkey bacon is my fav but since I had gallbladder out it doesn't agree with me anymore. Im going to look into more protein foods.cheese and me don't get along much either but I can have some that could be a good snack for me.thank you so much you have really helped me.
  • @lucky7, Ask your endocrinologist to see a diabetes educator or dietician. It surprises me that any endocrinologist wouldn't set you up on a diet plan and give you more advice. Anyway, those 2 people can really help you work out what sort of diet you should stick to and why and give you information about GD.

    I have had type 1 diabetes for 18+ years and I have worn an insulin pump since I was pregnant with my daughter over 5 years ago. I check my blood sugar anywhere between 12-15 times and day. One day my blood sugar was low most of the day, so I ended up checking 24 times! My high risk OB who is also managing my diabetes while I am pregnant doesn't want me over 90 fasting or 120 two hours after meals. The lower I can get it without having a low blood sugar the better.

    Obviously the main things you want to stay away from are sugar and carbs. Keep in mind that so many things have carbs in it as well. Now is a good time to start reading the nurtition infomation on your food packages if you don't already do so. Fruit has a lot of carbs, milk has carbs, some veggies have carbs. So even if you are limiting say breads, pastas, etc. you need to be careful if you have milk or a banana or something. I am definitely not saying don't eat/drink those things, but the key is moderation. This is why it is so important to get more information and have some sort of a diet planned worked out. Good luck!
  • oh and seriously, no offense but I want to punch your doctor in the junk. What a douche. He tells you you need to check your blood sugar 7 times a day but doesn't tell you what to do to keep in under 120? I mean he didn't tell you about carbs? Awesome doctor. Again, no offense if you really like them.

    @lucky7
  • @lucky7. I don't know if you can eat nuts, eggs or possibly milk. A cup of milk is 15 carbs or you could try soy milk. I found if I wanted to "cheat" on my diet and have ice cream I had to eat it with something high fat and high protien or something really healthy like a spinach salad with fruit meat nuts and cheese. Then I could have a small amount of ice cream or something.

    My newborn was only 8 lb 3 oz but my daughter before him was 9lb 9 oz. So I hear ya being concerned about ur diet and the baby's size. I think they didn't diagnose me with my daughter and I ate whatever I wanted. With this pregnancy I lost weight from changing my diet. He came out really healthy and not too big. One of my favorite cheated foods was coolwhip (the regular kind) I would mix that with the light and fit yogurt in the purple container for a tastey snack.
  • I just found recently, that I have it too. Cut out most carbs. Meat, cheeses, & veggies. Be care with potatoes, pasta, fruits, etc...
  • @juliek77 I don't like my Gyno anymore bc of everything that happened with my last pregnancy.Ive been with them so long I figured I didn't want to change with this pregnancy in hopes they would listen to me.well they were at the beginning but not anymore again.the endocrinologist I've only seen once and they promised me it would be a 30min appt bc I had to get my kids and the kids I babysit for off the bus and the dr is 45min away from my house.the appt took 2hrs and then I left and dr called me back while I was on my way home to tell me he forgot to give me the monitor and then when I got back it took them 20min to get it to me and of course as soon as I left appt already freaking out about getting all the kids on time my sons nurse called and he had to picked up from school bc he was sick(the day from hell)I had no idea what to expect from dr but I do know from being on here alot of ppl talked about diet plans but dr never talked about it. He basically took my history and blood and that was it.I don't have an appt for 3wks.the nurse said I can call if I have questions. My plan is to make my own diet plan for wknd and call them Monday and let them know im not happy. I already don't care for them so they better fix this quick.

  • @,HomeBirthAdvocate thank you.my dr didn't tell me any of that.he said before I eat it should be 60-90 and after I eat he doesn't want it any higher than 120 so I keep getting 130-138 after I eat and freaking out.I read eggs are good to eat but I have high cholesterol.I also eat fat free as much as I can bc I had my gallbladder removed and I notice the more fat I eat I get diarrhea really bad.looks like im going to be eating alot of lean meat like boneless skinless chickbreast and steak.I also found I can eat broccoli, bruseel sprouts, green peppers, cantaloupe, blueberries and tuna.I need to find out how much tuna I can eat between chunk light and albacore.I don't like any of the list of peas I found,im allergic to nuts,im going to try to find cheese I like.I found something about lunch meat but then it said I can't eat it when pregnant.im going to call Monday and tell them I need to sit down with someone bc I don't know what to eat and what to pair.the internet helps a little but every site tells you something different and im getting overwhelmed with different information.
