I know we're not doctors, but I need some perspective....

edited February 2011 in Pregnant
I was (am?) pregnant in my first trimester. I started bleeding heavily with clots on Thursday 2/10 and my doctor ordered a hcg level blood test. I measured as only having a hcg level of 13 and the nurse said because of the low levels (I thought I was about 5 1/2 weeks pregnant) along with the bleeding and light cramping, I was miscarrying. I went back yesterday for my second round of hcg level testing and will find out tomorrow the results. The bleeding has since stopped and the cramping has almost completely disappeared. I was looking online at what normal hcg levels are for 5 weeks and the nurse was right, I did measure low (the low end of the normal range is 18) BUT I still measured within normal range for 3-4 weeks pregnant. Is it possible that I'm just not as pregnant as I thought???
I was absolutely devastated when I found out I miscarried because my husband and I have been trying for 9 months so I don't want to get my hopes up if I'm just misunderstanding this hcg level thing. I know nothing is definite until I hear back from the nurse tomorrow, but I need some perspective if I'm just setting myself up for another let-down. Thoughts???? Thanks so much ladies - I really appreciate any thoughts, ideas and answers!!!

  • Heavy bleeding with clots isn't normal for 3, 4, or 5 weeks. Please don't get your hopes up.
  • I agree with and83. Clotting and cramping is a really bad sign at any point in your first trimester. Cramping with bleeding can sometimes be random, but more often than not clots are a miscarriage. I'm sorry. Keep us posted, tho.
