LIFE CHANGED IN A BLANK OF AN EYE

THE PAST WEEKEND I SPENT THREE DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL TRYING TO LOWER MY BLOOD GLUCOSE. IT STARTED AT 374 WHEN I WAS DISCHARGED IT WAS AT 147. DIAGNOSED WITH PRE GESTATIONAL DIABETES. THE DOCTOR RAN MULTIPLE TEST AND DETERMINED I BEEN A DIABETIC FOR A VERY LONG TIME. SINCE BEING FROM THE HOSPITAL I HAVE TO GIVE MY SELF 5 SHOTS A DAY. I CAN'T ENJOY THE FOODS I USED TO. I HAVE TO COUNT CARBS. THREE SMALL MEALS A DAY AND THREE EVEN SMALLER SNACKS.

IT HURTS THAT I'M 21 AND NONE OF MY DOCTORS CAUGHT THIS BEFORE. THE DOCTORS TOLD ME EVERYTHING THAT COULD HAVE WENT WRONG. AND THAT I COULD GO INTO PRETERM LABOR OR BE INDUCED. THE BABY IS DOING FINE. SHE IS GROWING OK AND EVERYTHING IS ON POINT. I HAVE TO SEE A HIGH RISK DOCTOR TO MONITOR THE BABY HEART EVERY TWO WEEKS. I WORRY SO MUCH NOW. I'M JUST READY FOR SEPTEMBER. IT'S SUCH A SHOCK BECAUSE OUT MY ENTIRE 21 YEARS I'VE NEVER HAD ANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS. BESIDES A COLD. I JUST HOPE EVERYTHING GETS BETTER FROM HERE ON OUT. I'LL BE 27 WEEKS TOMORROW.

WOW THAT IS RIDICULOUS.. I THOUGHT THE DOCTOR WOULD TEST YOU FOR IT. HELL HE TEST ME FOR HIV EVERY YEAR. I GUESS DIABETES ISN'T IMPORTANT. STARVING ISN'T THE WORD LOL A SNACK FOR ME IS HALF A SANDWICH. IM ALWAYS HUNGRY EVEN AFTER A MEAL... YES IT IS FRUSTRATING... GRRRR MY DOCTOR SAID FOR ME TO EXPECT WEIGHT LOSS. AND IT WON'T HARM THE BABY... I'M LIKE WHAT? FIRST THEY SAY GAIN WEIGHT. THEN LOSE IT. I'M LOSS. GLAD YOU AND BABY ARE OK... @romeike89

@supermommy89 actually, I asked my general physician to check me almost a year ago and he told me "nah, just loose weight". I'll be the first one to say that yes, I am overweight, but 10 grapes for a snack? Wtf? I want the whole Damn vine. Lol its really hard. Are u eating a lot of meat? That's pretty much carb free. And do they have u on the insulin pens or syringes and viles? Sorry its a lot of questions, but good to know someone is in the same friggen situation. Lol and the 3 day hospital stay... my food sucked and Noone came to visit me at all except my hubby. :(
  • I am diabetic too. I found out last year. I am 24wks preggo. I do insulin 4 times a day, but because I already knew..i gsd good blood sugar control before I knew I was preg. I am sorry that's how you found out. Don't get discouraged though. There are alot of wonderful low carb recipes and foods out there...even stuff specifically for diabetics. Once you get into the flow of counting carbs and stuff it well just become 2nd nature. It gets easier, I swear. Its still a pain in the ass, but it will get easier. You will slowly find more foods that are good for you and yummy :) They did a fetal echo on my lil girl at 22wks, and they will do another at 28, just to make sure... But she is doing wonderful, even on the small side, which is nice, bur growing perfectly. Just follow what your dr says, eat carefully, and I am sure you will have a wonderful healthy baby....and feel alot better yourself. Also....some insurances, like mine, cover dieticans or diabetic counselors. They are an amazing help...try looking into that as well. If you need anything, let me know and I can try and help you out. Good luck :) @supermommy89
  • I know your pain and frustration ladies. I have been a type 1 diabetic for over 18 years which means I have been taking insulin and dealing with this stupid disease for that long. I now wear an insulin pump which is great for me. It gives me alot more freedom and hey I don't have to take shots anymore. When I was diagnosed, I was 15 years old and had hardly ever been sick in my life. I had had my share of normal things like colds, flu and the chicken pox but then I started feeling really awful a couple months after my 15th birthday. I was always tired, weak, was so incredibly thirsty (I would go through a liter bottle of 7-up in less than an hour) and was peeing every 15 minutes. My mom finally smelled my breath one morning and noticed the fruity smell and rushed me to the doctor knowing what was going on. I had lost 25 lbs in about 2 weeks. The doctor tried to check my blood sugar on a regular meter in the office which just read "HI" and sent me straight to the hospital. Meters usually go up to 600. My mom took me to the hospital where I could barely walk in and they rushed me to the icu. I only remember a whole lot going on around me at that point and when my lab work came back that my blood sugar was over 1000, MY LIFE CHANGED FOREVER. I have been dealing with and living with this disease ever since and I am doing really well. I have no complications and I am on my 3rd pregnancy. My first was born with multiple birth defects but they don't know that it has anything to do with my diabetes.

I check my blood sugar between 12-20 times a day depending on the day. I tend to run kind of low (but they are starting to creep up right now) so one day I checked my blood sugar 24 times. I see a high risk OB (perinatalogist) ALOT (usually every 2 weeks) and they are following me very closely. I talk to the nurse practicioner in the office 2 times a week to go over my blood sugars and change my pump settings and rates and I am totally fine with it because I am feeling really good and the baby looks great. They keep telling me to eat more and I can't eat as much as they want me to. They want me eating between 175 to 200 grams of carbs a day and I feel like I have to make myself eat that sometimes. They are really strict on what I eat and when. I am not supposed to eat milk or fruit before 10 am because of the way the sugars in those things act differently in the morning. I eat 3 meals and 3 snacks in a day and it feels like as soon as I am done eating a meal, I am checking my blood sugar again and then eating again. I am not sure if it is different for type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes and pregnancy. I would imagine it is because while food and exercise is important to my glucose control, I rely mainly on insulin.

So hang in there ladies (sorry to make this so long, just wanted to share my story). Living with diabetes CAN sometimes be hard and frustrating but it doesn't have to be. I am here if anyone has any questions. Good luck!
  • I just wanted to add that dieticians and diabetes educators can really make a difference in your life right now and when you aren't pregnant any more. There are so many tips and tricks they can teach you about eating and controlling your blood sugar. You will quickly learn what you can eat that will fill you up and not have alot of carbs.
  • @juliek77 and @stillsurprised
it is alot to take on. I found out I was pregnant after 2 years of trying on a Thursday, saw the doctor Friday, got a call Tuesday and was admitted immediately they told me I had gestational. and now r telling me I've had in the whole time. it was completely crazy that it all happened in a week. I cried the whole 3 days. them telling me that I was probably just a miscarriage waiting to happen, etc. the diabetic educator is amazing. I see her quite often. she let's me break down and get all my worries out. I started on the flex pens, and I was scared, but got used to them. my new specialist( a real ass) doesn't like the flex pens,so I had to switch to syringes... its been a long scary nitemare
  • Well I am glad you are doing ok. Because I found out a year before I got preg, the only real difference with my care now is the insulin. I was on pills before but with the baby they made me super sick. I bert it has been scary.... But the end result will be a beautiful baby, so to me it is all worth it.
  • @romeike I'm not a big fan of meat... I try to eat it every day for dinner.. I'm a big vegetable eater though... its usually the breakfast that takes my sugar off chains. I'm on syringes and vials.. Ugh most difficult thing ever...

@Stillsurprised glad to know that someone is more experience.. You give me hope. I have a dietician. Counting carbs was difficult at first I'm gettin the hang of it. I don't eat anything without reading the nutrition facts lol

@juliek77 I was always thirsty and having to go. Thought it was pregnancy related... I'm just trying to better educate myself. My grandmothers has had it for 25 years. She doesn't use the insulin anymore. I'm just hoping to get this under control and not let this control me.

I want to thank all you ladies for responding. It makes me feel not alone. I wish all of toy healthy babies. And a great pregnancy.
