Our House Fire..

edited July 2011 in Current Events
So my husband ( @westnbaby ) and I are back in my hometown visiting my family for a week... we packed EVERYTHING we wear and use on a daily basis.. and I mean EVERYTHING (ever single pair of clothes we own because we had so much going on while we were visiting). WELLLL my husband and I, my parents, and my 2 younger brothers are all at church Tuesday night, my 2 younger brothers (16&10) left a little early.. they pulled into the garage, went inside to make waffles, my 16 yr old brother noticed a smokey smell and opened the garage and was hit with smoke. He got my other brother out of the house and called 911.. his car had caught fire in the garage. While on the phone he realized our dog was still insdie so he goes back into the house to get the house. By the time my husband and I get to our house there are about 4 fire trucks, tons of EMS, tons of volunteer fire fighters and smoke pouring out of the house. Once things calmed down and we could look at what happened, my brother & my mom's vehicles were both totally melted, the entire garage was burned, and the entire house was ruined with smoke damage. The whole house will have to be completely gutted, every single item will have to be professionally cleaned. My husband and I, along with my family, literally woke up the next day with just the clothes on our back. No toothbrush, make up, clothes, shoes, undies, nothing.. Its a hard reality shock to think "I need to get ready and then realize you have nothing to get ready with or even put on to wear". Luckily insurance is being awesome and taking great care of my family.. but its still hard. Its rough to think of what all was in the house that could be ruined.. we haven't been able to go through everything yet due to the smell, burning of our eyes, and all the sut. Some things that I've realized that are in the house are my wedding dress and the baby bed and bassinet we were going to use for our baby. Thank God no one was hurt, my 16 year old brother was awesome at staying calm and getting things under control. So please remember my family in your prayers, its going to be a long road (a minimum of atleast 6 months before they can think about moving back in their house) but everyone is very positive and thankful no one was harmed.

  • That's awful!! My kitchen caught on fire a few years ago and we had to live with my parents for 6 weeks while it was repaired. It was miserable. I'm glad your insurance is being helpful! We had to deal with renter's insurance and our apartment complex insurance and it was a total pain!
  • So sorry this happened to you guys. You are definately in my prayers. Do they know what caused the fire?
  • Oh no! This makes me teary-eyed. I'm SO glad you and your family are okay. I know the loss of those material things may be sad, but they can be replaced. Remember to be grateful for life in the midst of it all. You and your family are truly in my prayers.
  • I definitely will keep you in my prayers. I have been thru this before when my parents divorced me my little sister and my mom got a small 2 bedroom apartment about 6 months into living there the whole apartment building burned down 10 apartments. pets memories pictures, furniture, clothes, clothes shoes you name it was GONE!! looking at those pictures really bought back some not so good memories. I'm praying for you. How far along are you, try not to breath in that smell if you don't have to. One thing i learned is there were no one that was hurt except a few pets died but thank god your brother remained calm.
