Heroine Exposure

edited August 2011 in Pregnant
I am trying to look online too, but figured this was probably a very valuable resource here.

Does anyone know anything about heroine exposure during pregnancy.

A birthmom seems interested in us. She used heroine for the first few months of pregnancy. She has been doing methadone therapy since May. She is due at the end of this month.

Anyone have any insight as to what kind of things we may be in for if we're matched?

I appreciate ANY help or insight

Thanks friends...

  • Bump. I have no idea but I'd be curious as to any answers you receive.
And I'm excited someone is looking at you guys!!!
  • @mikeandronadopt I just seen a show about this the other day, the doctors were telling the mom the baby could come out addicted to the methadone and have withdrawl symptoms, I know this isnt much but I hope it helps
  • Heres what little info I have: a friend of mine was on methadone during her pregnancy due to some back issues, and her son was born addicted to it. He was in the hospital a little bit longer, but when he came home he was a very healthy little boy.

I sure hope this works out for you guys...you deserve it.
  • I worked in a methadone clinic/substance abuse facility for 9 years. Baby could have low birth weight and suffer withdraw symptoms. But will be normal as time progresses.
Methadone could improve pregnancy in heroin/opiate addicted women.
Keep with your research and seek advise from Addiction Specialist.
  • Mrthadone is very addicting itself I would assume baby would go through withdrawl after birth
  • Well i dont know about heroine but i was a coke baby and from what my family tells me i was fine except very clingy. I also have nieces and nephews who were/are meth babies the withdrawls(my cousin used throughout) were really bad. They cried alot and sometimes the shaking seemed like it wouldnt stop. But really all they need is all the love and attention that any parents would give their child. Sometimes they need a little more but im sure you both will do great!!! Best of luck!!! Hopefully you get your lil one soon
  • I think its just a wait and see game hoping this is your time for you lil miracle :)
  • She may have a bit of a withdraw after birth but the hospital will take care of her until she is healthy enough to come home...the methadone will help but not all the way...seen it on I'm pregnant and a drug addict
  • I also meant to say good luck and I hope you two finally get the baby you have wanted!!
  • I woul talk to an addictions specialist for sure. Good luck!
  • well, my thoughts are.....the two of you seem to be special and amazing men and i would think if the baby would have problems you guys would be the best parents for the job, some parents dont truly understand what it means to have a child and i think you guys would give this baby the best possible life problems or not....just my opinion
  • I worked in the NICU (for a shot time as it was too sad for me to handle) where we had many babies that were going through withdrawl from different drugs and medications the mother was on. I have to say heroin/methadone is the longest, sadest, most horrific withdrawl to watch in a baby. There are different treatment forms for the baby, so I would try to get in touch with a pediatrician and neonatoligist to give you their opinion and what to expect.
  • I saw an episode on tlc or somethin once of a woman prego on methadone and her babay was in hospital for a couple months in nicu and went through horrible withdrawls.. you won't know til the babys born but that baby will probably be in pain. I pray for that baby because my opinion is its not fair for that mother to put her child through this but I'm glad she's considering adoption.
  • My cousin did exactly the same and Her son came out absolutely healthy. Every situation is different and personally i think she was lucky! Talk to professionals and see what they say..Good luck guys!
  • I'm sorry to say I have info as my cousin had her baby many years ago and she was born an addict. None of the family knew about her addiction. Kirsty (her daughter) had to be kept in nicu and weaned off of her addiction, she went through a rough few weeks. When my cus saw what she had done she went straight into a program. With help she cleaned her act up and kirsty is a happy and healthy child with no recolection of what a crappy start she had. My personal thoughts are that you both could be just what this baby needs...good luck x x x

  • When my cousin was born my aunt was on heroin. He was born small and had to spend alittle time in the nicu, because of withdrawal symptoms. He went through alot at the start of his lil life. Now he is 18yrs and he has not shown any signs of having a body full of heroin when he was born. He is an amazingly smart kid and is on his way to college. I think you two would give that lil baby everything it would need....care, patience and more love than it could ever want :) You guys are in my prayers... I hope you get your baby soon.
  • IF IT WAS JUST THE FIRST FEW MONTHS THE BABY SHOULD B FINE HE OR SHE MIGHT B A LITTLE MORE FUSSIER THAN OTHERS BUT LOOK HOW MANY NON DRUG USERS HAVE FUSSY BABIES AS LONG AS THE DOWN SYNDROM TESTS AND ANATOMY SCANS CAME OUT GOOD AND SHE IS NOT USING IN THE LATTER PART OF HER PREGNANCY THE BABY WILL PROBABLY LIVE A NORMAL LIFE...U COULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH ADD OR ADHD BUT THAT AFFECTS A MAJORITY OF CHILDREN...SPEAK WITH THE DOCTORS I'M SURE THE BABY WILL BE FINE ...HOW MUCH DOES THE BABY WEIGH?
  • I don't have Any advice or thoughts on what to do that haven't been mentioned already but congratulations on possibly finding a birthmom. ♥
  • Im 99.9% sure as long as there is no rug use in the third trimester all should be fine when it comes to addiction. Most docs will not even scribe narcotics during the last trimester due to addiction risks. As for other effects ... u just have to wait till baby is born. I say get that baby! This could b ur ink chance and that baby deserves two wonderful parents like u guys. Not a drug addicted mother. Good luck and I hope the baby is well and u get him/her
  • I have read the same...that the withdrawal symptoms are most severe with heroine. It is sad that the baby will be in pain and have to withdrawl from the methadone
...but amazing u 2 are willing to give her an opportunity on life! God bless u!
  • I feel like the methadone alone is terrible for a baby, they do come out addicted to it and usually have to spend a few weeks in the nicu weening off of the methadone itself. Its a very sad circumstance and some babies come out very effected by the early herione use while others not at all... i guess u could commend this girl for being honest with you about her actions during the pregnancy but if it were my situation i would keep looking (maybe for a teen mother looking to adoption) because although u will love this child like your own u don't know how the drug use will effect them as they grow, and if possible i would avoid it. :/ good luck guys
  • I honestly don't have an answer. My cousin did drugs with her daughter but she very very luckily came out with nothing wrong with her and is a very smart little girl today. That is not always the case. I'm sure it is probably like a 1% chance of that kinda of thing happening. Either way I hope you two finally get to start your family. I am sending bunches of...Adoption dust?? would that be the right one lol. Anyways. Good luck!! I'm rooting for ya'll =)
  • Expect a very small shaky baby that doesn't sleep a lot, cries a lot more than usual, is addicted to heroin, going threw with drawls, stays smaller than usual and possibly mentally handy cap. My cousins first child was a meth baby and they have very similar issues. That baby needs a very loving home with ppls to take care of her, if you guys have the strength to do it, please do.
  • It's kinda iffy, the baby will have some withdrawls symptoms in the beging but could turn out perfectly healthy. You really won't know until the baby is born.
I watched a show on discovery health about the same situation and her baby turned out fine. But I'm no doctor
  • @all ... thanks friends... we are ofcourse doing other research too but greatly appreciate all of your input.

We are confident that we will be able to deal with whatever hand God deals to us.

Please keep us and the baby (whether placed with us or not) in your prayers...
  • I will definitely say a prayer. Good luck.

  • @mikeandronadopt I was reading this thread and I agree with liw birth weight and a little extended stay in the hospital for baby but I truly feel like you guys need this baby as much as the baby needs you guys! I think the strong bond that I have read about your family you together can get through anything! Not everyone would even consider a possible drug addicted baby because some people are so shallow and judgemental....i pray this works for you! Looks like your note to baby may come true! Good Luck!
