Needing advice on erythromycin and Vitamin K for newborn

edited September 2011 in Pregnant
I'm trying to do research on the necessity of these two things. I've never had Gonorrhea or Chlamydia. My midwife will test me again next week when I get my group B strep test.... but with everything thing else I'm sure I'll be fine. As for the Vit K shot, if we have a son we do not plan on having him circumcised. The only reason I think I would get it is if our baby (boy or girl) had a lot of bruising from delivery. I just wanted some advice on what you all thought. Thanks!!

  • I was told vitamin k was an ointment, not a shot. What does that shot do? I know the ointment protects your babys eyes
  • I was told the vit k is a must. as there body can't clot blood yet!
  • @valentinasmommy Vit K is a shot giving to your infants b/c they do not have the means to clot blood right away. Once their intestines start to work babies will produce Vit K just fine. When circumcisions were routinely done, baby were given the shot unless you were having a rabbi performing it..... they waited until the baby was at least a week old and by that point the baby already had the means to clot their own blood. However, in hospitals the babies are given the shot regardless. The ointment you are talking about is the erythromycin, which helps protect from bacteria in the mother's vaginal canal. The bacteria that caused these issues with blindness were Gonorrhea or Chlamydia... which I've never had. Since I'm delivering at a birthing center hopefully, I have been given the option if I want these or not. I'm hesitant to give antibiotics if they are not needed since we have so many strains of super mutant bacteria now. As with the Vit K I'm open to giving it if my midwife thinks it is needed after delivery. I just wanted to know if there were any side effects that I don't know about yet.
  • Oh ok. I was told vitamin k was for the eyes once the baby comes out. @somastar
  • If u have had plenty of vit k in ur diet during pregnancy its not necessary. It's a shot directly in the muscle of baby but u might have the option of the drops if u feel more comfortable. All my clients have refused vit k with no issues. The eye ointment is for stds like u mentioned and isn't really necessary either. Delayed cord clamping and nursing right away helps blood clot
  • my clients have refused the eye ointment as well and like their babies to see them at birth :) less stress for baby
  • In Co the k shot and eye ointment is a must u have to get It no matter What.

K shot is so there blood can clot since liver being immature and unable to do the things needed

Eye ointment is for due infection and it can be wiped away with a cotton ball after one min

In my state we have to do all of this
  • The way I look at the shots is And im not trying to make anyone mad but my mom did every shot and I was okay.
  • The vitsmin k shot is to prevent a bleeding on the brain that can occure in the first 7 weeks. Its rare but may as well just to be safe.

  • I have refused both with both babies and will again this time too...mercola very good, I couldn't find my study and background on those 2 to post
  • I won't let them do the vitamin K shot, my boys aren't circumcised. The only reason you would need this is if you are planning to circumcise your son.
