how long does your newborn nurse?

edited October 2011 in Breastfeeding
My nb nurses 30 to 40 minutes, every 2 to 4 hours but it seems like if he's awake, he's nuzzling. I'm taking care of my 1 year old also, do I nurse more? Sometimes I just take him off after 20 minutes on each side.

  • Allow babe to nurse as long as he needs to.
I have an unusually high volume of milk (so I've been told be 3 different lactation nurses) so my 17 day old feeds on one side at a time. On the right side she only eats 5-8 mins. Although I have "slow flow" on my left side, and I currently have to use a shield, so she eats for about 20 mins on that side. I do think some babies need pacified more than others. My oldest two hated pacifiers and I didn't mind. But this one def needed a pacifier she was sucking my pinkie raw just to fall asleep. So we tried a pacifier and as of thursday she is much better. So she now eats every two hrs-
  • Yeah, he won't take a pacifier at all.
  • I feed my 11 day old every 2-4 hrs for 30 mins to an hr, just depends on her needs at the time
  • My son took ten min or less on each side he was a very efficient nurser but not all babies are like that. Plus he had to cluster feed or use me as a paci at nite
  • My pediatrician said to let my daughter (12 days old) actively nurse for about 10 minutes on each side then offer a pacifier
  • never time nursing sessions, this could dramatically effect supply..ten minutes for some babies may mean they dont get enough of the hindmilk which is higher in fat...some babies may need 20 min or more on each side
  • Mine between 10 to 40 depending onwhat he needs or wants. Thats also just on one breast
  • My 2 week old nurses for an hour, sometimes just on one breast sometimes half way through he switches.my concern is after he still acts hungry?
  • @survivormommie3 what pacifier did yall get cause I'm having that problem with my daughter
  • I nurse as long as she wants. And at night if when shes super fussy I know she just wants to use me as a pacifier to fall asleep which is my favorite time of the day lol
  • How can you tell when they're ready to switch sides? @Proudmommy8789 @Bahamamama4828
  • She only nurses on one side. And then the other one on the next feeding
