pumping question!

I have a medela mini electric pump and I think the flange is the wrong size. I just pumped for about 5 mins got 1 1/2 oz but after my nipple was all puffed and purple looking! so how do I know if its too big or too small? Im thinking too big cause it looked like A LOT of nipple being pulled.. now my nipple is a bit sore (like from a baby with a bad latch) btw it was my first time using a pump

If it pinches or hurts while you're pumping its too small. And it will also affect the milk flow.

Ok I just read that you shouldnt see white at the base of the nipple. There is white when I pump. But the article doesnt say whether its too big or too small!

that sounds like my first time pumping with the hospitals pump. my second time didnt hurt as much maybe the suck was on too high?

So...i dont get it. should there only be you nipple and no aerola(sp) in the tunnel? Because when i was pumping i had my areola in the tunnel too but i would get an ok supply...

I read on the medela website that most women are a large ~ extra large and that they come with medium. The site made it sound like areola should be included. The way ob read it anyway! @kayleigh27

yes areola should be included, like when youre nursing

My areola used to get bruised looking and my nips sore when I first pumped. It just stopped on its own. I just had to get my body used to it I guess
