Breastmilk and formula?

edited December 2011 in Pregnant
I was wondering if giving my baby breastmilk and formula would be a good idea. I don't want to give up breastfeeding completely, but lately my nipples have been very sore to the point where I can only pump, and that's not even enough to feed her in one session. My daughter is 4 weeks today, and I want to try and give her formula after I feed her breastmilk first. Any ideas on which formula is good to buy?

  • You could mix formula and bm 1/2 too... Im in Australia so our formula is different brands, Goodluck finding one that suits lo
  • Yes you can mix the two. & I exclusively bf but I used formula a few times when I first started becuz my nipple hurt so bad I needed a break also & I used enfamil. Worked fine for me!

  • I do both. I use the enfamil newborn. I mix it together 1/2 & 1/2. Baby girl has no problem with it.

I would recommend just breast..lots of time when women do both they utlimtly end up doing just formula..I agree w/ @HomebirthAdvocate try seeing a lactation consultant :)
  • @nameless took my comment lol I started off strictly bf nipples were sore and I got a breast infection so I did half and half before I knew it I was formula feeding only have you tried the nipple shield from madella sp? You can buy them at babies r us or Burlington and they are awesome I used them with my first and somewhat towards the end of the second child but lost the desire to bf because formula was so much easier for me. I would do the shield and lanalin sp? Make sure you get it wet first. They really work great!
  • I've been doing both since my lo was born. I was doing more formula than bm at first but now its more bm.
  • @secon_time_mommy7 oops sorry.. :) that's what happen to me too..
  • A week and half ago I decided to give my little man two formula feeds a day as I was spending a lot of time feeding him and I felt my three year old was missing out. I do his bottle feeds approx 12 hours apart (around 10am and daddy does 10pm) and breastfeed in between. It's working great for me so far. I have had so many problems breastfeeding this time and have almost given up a couple of times, but love breastfeeding and the benefits for him. Good luck
