breast feeding storage and usage

edited December 2011 in Breastfeeding
How long can I keep thawed breast milk for? My mil thawed some before I got off work in the fridge and she didn't use it. I would like to be able to save it since I am home for 3 days.... thanks.

  • I've read different stuff and that was one I read as well. darn I wanted go save it. I can't refreeze it either can I?
  • 24 hrs... I just had that happen.. bottle feed the milk and pump to make it up. It sucks but its better than tossing it...
  • Ok thank you ladies. :)
  • this us such good question after pumping how long do u guys usually leave your milk in the fridge for? Bc I've read so many different things. And also once you open the storage bag and heat it and if your little one doesn't finish a lot of it can u just put the bottle in the fridge for couple of hrs or do u just toss it?

  • I go by the 5 5 5 rule. 5 hours at room temp 5 days in fridge 5 months in freezer unless you have a deep freeze 1 year. Bm can sit 10 hrs at room temp though. The other question about re using my best friend was a nanny and she said if jennika didn't finish all of it she would put it back in the fridge and re use it later or even the next day but nothing after that. She said it never bothered jennika or jordynn when she did it. I don't know if that's correct or not but I have re used brodys before. He seemed fine

Thank you guys thats very helpful I usually only put the bottle bag in the fridge for couple of hours bc sometimes my bf thinks shes hungry and will open a bad and warm it up and it in the bottle and all the sudden shes not hungry and starts falling asleep so I don't want to wast it so I use it for the next feeding.
