The "evil eye"... Superstition?

edited January 2012 in Babies
Do u guys think someone can give a baby the evil eye? When I came home from work my MIL said my LO was fussy all day and that she thought his tummy hurt. So I went and got him gripe water.

But then she asked me if he had recently gotten a scare bcuz he was also jumpy all day and she said babies act that way it might be because they got scared.

So she asked if I wanted her to rub him down/massage him then go over him with an egg and I said sure why not...so she made me bathe him with a tiny bit of alcohol in the bath water then she rubbed his entire body with baby oil then once she was done rolling an egg all over his body she broke it into a cup.

After she broke it she said it looked like he might have had the evil eye on him because the egg yolk didnt float up to the top...

Do u guys believe in this stuff or ever go through something similar with your baby??

  • whats an evil eye? never heard of it
  • @ripkaydence Its when someone looks at ur baby too "harshly" I guess u can say and they say since babies r so sensitive it can affect them.
  • wow!!! ive never ever heard of that! like thats kinda creepy!!!
  • @tawanna613 some people dont do it purposely, they just happen to look at the baby too harshly.

Maybe this is completely off the wall but I got to thinking that he hasnt met anybody new recently BUT yesterday my sister babysat him at her apt. Well...i grew up in that apt until I was 16 and I can 100% say it is haunted BIG time. Almost everyone that has lived in any apt in the building has had experiences...so it crossed my mind that something could have scared him but I dunno :(
  • @mom2ing have u had any experiences?
  • Hum my baby has been fussy and not wanting to sleep at night wonder if it could be anything like that
  • Oh I believe. My son will get super fussy so i'll have my fil do the egg on him and within hours my lo is way better. We see a huge difference in him once we do it.
  • I believe it
  • The practice of the egg is actually a very old one. Who's to say baby didn't get scared by something at your sisters? I just moved out of a haunted house and it never bothered my son or I. We were the only ones that ever saw anything. My husband never did but sometimes heard thongs (we lived there 2 yrs). We used to hear someone singing in my son's over the baby monitor. My son still hums the song. And he often talks about his friends. I don't worry about it because I've seen things my entire life and haven't ever felt afraid or threatened by what I saw or heard. I'll have to do more research but I was pretty sure the evil eye involves a lot more than just looking harshly at someone. I could be wrong though.
  • *things....lol, thongs! He wishes......
  • .I believe it in Spanish its "Que le hacen ojo" every time baby is fussy i will say the lords prayer while rolling and egg on baby. It always works.. also to protect them from that Mexicans put baby a deers eye "ojo d venado" so if someone trys to give them the eye it usually lands there and it will fall apart, and protect them.so that's what my mom told me...
  • @annaluis well put lol that's exactly what we believe :)
  • Yes I've done it to my baby a few times but we do little crosses with the egg all over the babys body while saying the lords prayer. Once you crack the egg in water what I've been told is if you look at the egg it looks like an eye the yolk being the middle of the eye if it looks like that then they had ojo. Like @annaluis said its a small braclet babys could wear to prevent it.
  • 100% believe in it. In some really bad cases blood appears in the egg. :/
  • No I dont believe it. Babies get fussy. Its normal. Someone could give my son the dirtiest look imaginable and he'd laugh lol. I believe something could have scared him if the apt is haunted, but I dont believe in the giving too harsh of a look thing.
  • Yeah in mexico my family is huge with this. Its called giving a baby "ojo" for short. It could be that they looked at the baby and were jealous in a way and didnt touch the baby. Usually that baby will be fussy and get sick. Its a REALLY old wives tale.
  • @shimattsbaby @annaluis @txmommy93011 I actually do have the bracelet and deer eye thing that my bf's parents got for him but I never put it on him, I am going to now for sure...

    @ou
  • @0utlaw_sphinx Thats scary, I really do hope he did not see anything :)

@ezrasmommy see I had the same belief as you but seeing him so jumpy made me wonder...

I agree w @ezrasmommy, but everyone has their own beliefs. My mil believes in 1,000,000 different superstitions its hard to keep up w all of them.lol But my mom is the total opposite she'd always tell us not to believe in superstitions so I guess that's why I try not to believe in them.
  • 100% belive it can also happen if you laugh too much at a baby you can give them ojo its not always a bad look. And sometimes if its really bad the baby can get like a red bump on its eye.you can use an egg theres also a way to do it with a dried chili peper.
  • Ooo im in the UK and never heard of this. im so intrigued now
  • Babies just have their days just like we do. Ezra will be a monster one day and the next he's an angel
  • @juliansmommy @ezrasmommy I am the same way. My mom didnt raise me believing in that stuff and if I tell her I let my mil do that she will probably talk crap lol. But I didnt see harm in rubbing an egg all over Zori's body lol...it was just soo weird the way he was acting. He is always such a happy baby but seemed so different yesterday.

Aww well whatever it takes to make Zori happy:)...he's probably having mommy withdrawls lol...my mil would've done the same w Julian...like everytime she comes over and she's holding Julian he'll turn and look at this big mirror in our living room and she'll be like "no, no mires eso porq es malo" and she hadn't noticed his swing has that mirror right above him so I finally said I think he'll be okay his swing has a mirror that he stares at all the time...lol
  • @juliansmommy lmao...I thinl he just haf gas because once I gave him gripe water he was back to his normal self. I'm gonna try to switch him to the gentle ease formula too.
  • Yeah you should girl, that'll help him a lot. I felt so bad for Julian when he had really bad gas.
  • @juliansmommy lol that would irritate me. That's a plus to not having my bfs parents here lol
  • @ezrasmommy-yea, its so irritating! You are very blessed to not have them near u...lmao
  • @juliansmommy u can say that again lol
