Did you have a monthly while Breastfeeding???

So I was talking with my doctor today, I thought I was a myth that when only breastfeeding you don't get a monthly and it is less likely to get prego. She said most women don't have monthlys when only breastfeeding, and because of that you don't ovulate and its harder to get prego.

Wtf!!!! I have had 2 children who only breastfeed for a year or more, I still had regular monthlys. I am shocked, so I thought I would share. Lol

  • I still had mine also
  • Mhmm. I had all my periods and I have never used formula. I am pregnant and was on the minipill! She's 6 months old! I'm just fertile. Lol. :">
  • See that's what she wants to put on is the mini pill.
  • I still have periods and am ebf. Also on the mini pill...
  • Yeah, they told me the combo of BFing and the minipill was basically fool proof. I'm getting Mirena again after this baby since it's ok to BF while you have it.
  • I had the paragaurd its the iud without hormones, I had it in for almost 5 years with no problems, unrolled Jan 2011 I got prego three times and lost all three. I found out I was prego again in August and now due April 9th.
I was told today by my doctor today that while breastfeeding they prefer paragaurd, because Mirena has a higher risk of damage or getting lost due to having a baby and breastfeeding Something about breastfeeding keeps your cervix softer longer. Idk Talk to your doctor make sure you know the risk.
  • He wanted me to get it after my last baby. I dunno what you mean by damage or a higher chance of getting lost. Lol. The only difference between paraguard and Mirena is the hormones?
  • I mean that it can punch through and get lost. Yes I know that's the only difference, Idk so you just might want to make sure before you get it. Not saying not to get it just saying it might be good to double check. My doctor doesn't give Mirena as an option right after birth or while breastfeeding.
  • I just looked on the websites for both. Both are ok to breastfeed with. :) Thank you for insight though!
  • Your Welcome. I know every doctor is different, just know it can never hurt to ask ?s :)
  • Surprised I'm breastfeeding & on Minnie pill. Didn't know breastfeeding stops ovulation. Didn't know u can get prago on Minnie pill. Wow
  • I havent had a period since having my daughter in sept. I am bf'ing and occasionally giving formula. Hubby and i are only using the pullout method right now so i hope im not ovulating.
  • I didn't have a monthly for 8 months after Mr first son and 11 months after my second son. I found it to be a blessing. Lol.
  • I'm 11 weeks pp, breastfed up until 5 days ago and haven't gotten my period yet
  • @Fate do you still bf since your pregnant?
  • I ebf my son who is 2 now....until a lil after he was 1 and I never got a period at all until he was 9 months...not even spotting. I guess everyone is different :)
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • @mommyfor3 Absolutely! Although, I am stopping when my baby turns 9 months. :( I don't feel I will be able to eat enough to support both of them sufficiently at that stage.
  • I will add that the doctor encouraged me to breastfeed the entire time and even "tandem" nurse (breastfeed both babies when the new baby comes). He said that towards the end of my pregnancy my baby probably will not like the taste of my milk because of the colostrum, and a lot of babies self-wean because of it.
  • I have been curious how that works...did you notice any change in your supply when you became pregnant @Fate
  • I am ebf and on the mini pill..I have had af twice since my lo was born and she is 2 months now, it wasn't each month tho they were like 2 weeks apart from each other. I had horrible irregular periods before I got prego & it looks like I'll be that way again...but I hope it goes away, but not be becoming prego again lol, cause I didn't miss it at all lol
  • I ebf my son who is 4 months, on mini pill & no period so far!
  • Thanks ladys nice to know I'm not the only one that has had a monthly, but also nice to know that its possible to not have one.
Anyone have any side effects from the mini pill?
  • No i have not...I have been on it for almost a month.
  • I had one while bfing my first two children. I wonder if I will this time, hope not!
  • I JUST started last night! SO dissappointed, lol. Almost 5 mo pp, ebf.
  • @mommyfor3 Yes, there was a diminish, but I made up for it by pumping. I pump more often now than I did beforehand.
  • @Fate does dr. think it will cause contractions? So many questions, sorry!
  • @mommyfor3 He said that the amount of oxytocin released during breastfeeding is rarely enough to start labor. Ask away, I had questions too! I actually didn't nurse her the first day I found out, I didn't think it was an option to do it while pregnant so I just gave her bottles of breast milk from the freezer.
