Could use any tips/words of wisdom

edited February 2012 in Breastfeeding
My little man is only 6 days old, I'm breast feeding & its been a bumpy road so far. Struggled to get him to latch properly over the weekend, he seemed starving but would get himself so worked up & frustrated he wouldn't feed, was worried so called midwife out to see us which resulted in admission to hospital as he'd lost 13% of his birth weight. Hospital were great, had loads of support to try & establish bf, found out my boy has got a tongue tie which hasn't helped matters.
Anyway he is now feeding regularly but still struggles to get a good latch & oh my goodness its starting to get very painful, saw my midwife again yesterday who's referring us to a different hospital for his tongue tie (the hospital I delivered in/was readmitted to doesn't do anything about them but due to where I live I can be referred elsewhere - that's the UK health system for you!) So while I'm waiting to be seen would be very very grateful for any tips on what I can do to make bf less painful as I'm determined I'm not giving up, thanks in advance :)

    good luck! keep trying :)
  • You can contact your local Le Leche League to find a good lactation consultant. they will be able to help with the latch issues. The L&D at your hospital should be able to suggest a lactation consultant as well. Keep up the good work momma!
  • The first two weeks are going to be painful as you already know and maybe a little longer since your son is having some issues but believe me it is sooooooooooooooo worth it in the end and through all the pain... Watch when y'all both get it down packed your just gonna be poppin then boobies out like nothing lol
  • No shield. If you can find someone to clip it like a midwife, ear nose throat doc, an LC, and I have even seen a dentist who does it.
My kids had tongue tie. It might take months for the tongue tie to get used to nursing and be less painful.
How long do you have to wait for a clip?
  • @Bahamamama4828 I don't know how long yet, got another midwife appt today so I'll Chase it up
