worried...

edited March 2012 in Food
My 2 year old only seems to want to eat hotdogs, chicken nuggets (not fast food but I bake them in the oven) and uncrustables...I've tried everything bc we eat pretty healthy and don't eat out alot at all. My daughter on the other hand will sit and eat baby spinach leaves right out of the bag raw, like the lettuce ones...I'm not sure how to get him to eat anything else. Like last night he took chicken breast from my plate but just looks at it makes a face and gives it back to me. He won't eat mashed potatoes, rice even Mac and cheese. In the morning usually he will eat dry cereal or waffles...with no syrup tho.
I'm so used to my daughter who always loved veggies and even ate tofu she eats really good him forget it...any suggestions or should I just let him eat what he will eat?

  • One other reason I'm concerned is bc he is 25 lbs and my sisters kid is a year younger and weighs more than him...we saw the Dr in Jan and he didn't say much about the weight bc my daughter was the same she was almost 2 and 18 lbs...now she is at a good weight at 8 years old.
  • I wouldnt be too concerned. His weight seems okay and if the dr didnt mention it, im sure hes fine. My ten year old went through a stage of only wanting to eat certain foods at around two years old. I just ended up riding it out, just keep offering up new things and dont make it into a power struggle, and im sure he'l come out of it soon. its so frustrating though. oh yeah, i also got josh to help prepare and cook some simple stuff, which he loved, he ALWAYS ate what 'he' made.
  • @JoshnEviesmum thx:) I guess bc with my daughter they put us thru so much, testing and specialists bc she was so thin...it makes me worry with him now. But if you say its prob a stage I'm hoping that's the case...that's a good idea to have him help cook. I'll have to start that, well obviously not using the overnight but maybe having him help mix things in the bowl etc.
  • Try making the chicken nuggets into things so he starts trying new things. Like chix parm but with nuggets. Call them mini parm. Or make your own chicken nuggets and put veggies in them. (use ground chicken) look on pinterest.com for cool kids ideas. You can take and give him "protein shakes" if you really want him to gain weight. But id be more worried about the picky eatting thing.
  • My son is three and is a good eater but only when he wants to eat. In the summer when it is nice outside he can seriously go days with out eating only drinking. We tried everything to get him to eat and i got sick of it and said he was fine and when he is hungry he will eat. The doctor used to say he is under weight but has stopped now since he is getting bigger, he even went six months with no growing and was tested for many things. He is healthy though and just wants to he when he wants to. He will eat a big breakfast and then he wont eat for the rest of the day, or he wont eat all day and then eat just dinner. We offer him every meal and healthy snacks and if he doesnt want it we dont make him eat it... although recently we started if you dont eat dinner you dont get a bed time snack bc he wont eat anything and then when we said bed time he says he is hungry. At first i felt bad and let him stay up but now no bc he doesnt even eat it then. I feel a parents knows best, he eats when he is hungry, but he is also very very active and tall which is why he is so skinny. He weighed 20 pounds at one year and still the same at two years, now at 3 and a half he is almost 30 and i think that is mostly from being inside all winter. I wouldnt force him to eat, i know my doc made us do ovaltine as chocolate milk bc kids love it and it has a lot of vitamins.
  • @sehra4177 ... He's only eating it because he's allowed to ;-)

My Dr told me that kids have a survival instinct just like adults.. when they get hungry enough.. they'll eat what is given to them. LOL

Maybe you need to re-program him.

My 8 year old is chubby and I'm in the middle of re-programming her eating.

She goes to her dads house on weekends so he gives her just about anything.
  • @YNVTish its def not my first choice I cook and give him veggies and everything we eat which is usually chicken, fish or some kind of meat and sometimes a side like whole grain rice. Or sometimes mashed potatoes. He usually doesn't touch it. I deep bad bc he isn't eating and don't want him to starve so I do then make nuggets or something. So your saying if he doesn't eat just to not give him anything?
With my daughter the specialists would always tell me to give her whatever she will eat.
I do wait until we are all done and if he hasn't touched his food by then that's when I heat something up bc I can't stand the fact of him going to bed hungry. Bc he is also not the type to ask for food...I always have to offer it.
I mean I know he won't waste away over night but I feel like I'm depriving him if I don't offer him something:(

My first child was like this.. she was very petite and slender. Very very picky too. I soon realized that she was actually running the show and training me to bow down and give in.

Now I would say if the kid just really hates a certain food then don't give it to them.

Example: my 8 year old (not my oldest) but the chubby one... She won't eat baked or grilled fish but will eat fried fish. This is more of preference. I make her eat fish period...

What i did with my oldest... The picky one is I disguised the healthy foods.

Like ... Mixed broccoli in her mac-n-cheese

Cut her baked chicken breast with cookie cutters and arranged her food on her plate to make a pic.

I used food coloring sometimes to trick her... Like green eggs and ham and read her the book at the table

    Make fruit shish-ka-bobs!

I also noticed that sometimes it wasn't the food but more of the texture. My daughter didn't like mash potatoes but she loved scallop potatoes or chunky fully loaded potatoes.

  • Ok thx for all the helpful suggestions:) I'm gonna have to just put my foot down and be more stern with him eating what we eat
  • My 2 yo is 26lbs and eats everything! Lol
Didn't read other comments. You can bake things and sneak small amounts of fruits/veggies in like baked oatmeal with zucchini/or any fruit or a breakfast bake with eggs bacon a veggie/fruit and a biscuit topping.
  • @2ndbutfirst I have been lately having him help me. It's hard bc I'm the only here at night with all 3 kids including a one month old so I try but usually am half way thru making dinner and the baby starts crying. He is getting better tho now...slowly. I mde homemade meatballs and spaghetti he tore it up. They were even whole grain noodles. It's still hard but I keep trying.
  • @Bahamamama4828 great ideas, thx. Hopefully he will outgrow it real soon but I'll try anything:)
