Snacks/sippy cups?

edited April 2012 in Ages & Stages
When did your LO's start being able to hold and drink out of sippy cups? Also, how long did they practice before they got the hang of it? Jaksyn will be 7 months in a couple days, and still struggles really bad with holding the sippy cup up to his mouth. If I hold it there he will drink it, but he cant hold it up by himself to drink and we have been working on it for over a month now. I feel like my 3 year old Logan was good at it around this age, and I know they are all different but it is getting frustrating that he wont do it. Also, he wont really hold those biter biscuts up and eat off them, and he wont eat those gerber snacks either... he just wont pick things up and eat them. I need to give the finger foods more time I know that because we havent been doing them long, but any suggestions on how to get him moving along a little faster would be great!! I dont want to rush him, but I feel as though he is just lazy about it. What are some table foods that you guys give a 7 month old too? I dont make his baby food, but I want to have him eating table food with us by around a year.

  • My daughter is 6 mo an we r doing the same thing. Sorry im no help but bump. I give my daughter toast an she practices hand to mouth coordination with that
  • My son is 6.5 months & he's been drinking through a sippy cup for about a month now. GLADLY, he was great at holding it up & drinking from it since the 1st time I gave it to him :D now when he's drinking his bottle & I try to hold it for him, he won't eat, he likes to do it on his own :( as for the snacks, maybe try one of those mesh thingies, you put fruit or veggies in it so they wont choke & they can it it themselves :D
  • @clope18 what kind of sippy cup does he use? Maybe I'm using one that is too hard for him to hold...
  • Around 8 months I got our daughter to use a sippy cup. Shes 11 months now and really has the hang of it. Just keep introducing it to ur LO. My husband has spoiler her with table food for awhile now lol so we buy those gerber smacks like the fruit bars or the puff thingys. Ive also given her chex mix. And a little bit of cheeze its. Basically whatever they can handle. Mine had 8 teeth by 6 months so she could eat things pretty well
  • My daughter is 11 months and we started her 5 months ago. She didn't really get the hang of it until about 8 months, although she's recently began fine tuning it and is an "expert" LOL.

As for the foods, just keep introducing them and eventually they'll get it. I think around 8 or 9 months is when they really get the hang of it and master that skill.
  • Nyla has been drinking out a sippy cup since 5 months n now she can hold It n feed herself
  • My baby boy is 6 months n he is currently using a training sippy(the one with handles) n he's really good with it. Now he's Mr. Independent n thinks he can hold anything n gets his clothes all wet lol love him
  • I wont be bothering for another month or two. Evie wont hold a bottle yet( 5 months) so i know she isnt ready, lazy chika : -)
  • He uses Tommy-Tippie sippy cups, they're great. You can get then at Babies R Us or online. I recommend :D
  • My lo thinks her sippy cup is a teether. She just chews the nipple. She's only 5 months tho.
  • My son who's 4 years now was great with the sippy cup. He started at 5 months and by 7months was off the bottle. My lo who's 6 months now has no interest in the sippy cup.
  • @clope18 mine does not like tommie tippie sippy cups at all
  • @Steph_Due_1016 really! My son loves them :D I've tried a couple other brands & those are his fav
  • @everyone thanks so much for all the input! Last night Jaksyn suprised me, when I put it on his tray he picked it right up and started chugging it right down!!! I was like o man, you have been tricking me this whole time!

Jack is 5 months and can hold a cup with handles. i just have to help guide it to his mouth. we rarely do the cup though. He doesnt do snacks yet
  • Is ur baby bottle feed or breastfed...naliyah drinks out of a sippy cup but doesn't really know how to hold it cause she's breastfed...as for the smacks naliyah already grabs things to eat and she's 6 months...maybe just sit him down and put snacks in front of him multiple times a day and show him how to do it... let him see you do it
  • @newmomma13 He is bottle fed, and ever since he was about a month old he would put his hand around the bottle to hold it, but the second you let go so does he... he still wont hold it. Last night though he finally picked the sippy cup up and started chugging it down! Maybe he just didnt want it before... yea I'm going to have to just keep showing him the snacks and wait for him to get the hang of it.
