New test during pregnancy

  • I got my 12 and 20 week scans and tests with both my kids. Not because I would necessarily abort if there was a problem but so I could make an informed decision on any issues that might have been found and if there was something needing special treatment after birth the hospital staff would be aware and ready. I dont know if I could go through with a termination but I also dont know if I would be strong enough to deal with a badly handicapped child (physical issues I could deal with) I think if this test could simply assist in finding out about health issues and not have all the other aspects involved it would be a wonderful resource.
@captivated im so sorry you had to go through that. What an awful situation to have to go through. I read alot of your posts and I think you really must be an amazing woman to have lead the life you have at times and not be in the loony bin xox

  • Gotcha! Thanks @homebirthadvocate ! I was wondering thru that whole story line! I couldn't imagine going thru something like that. @captivated is one tough mama!

I would do the test only because my first was born with severe eye problems (micropthalmos and scleracornea) and I would like to know my chances of it happening again with my future children.
You know like @tinka1326 said its 50/50 theres pro's & con's to it.
  • Yea @Ashley_smashley. Mine was technically alive, if you want to consider it that. For my own sanity and the life of that child, I could not have carried to term. Downs syndrome and other disabilities is something I would never consider having a termination for.

The test would be helpful to prepare for a special needs baby. Especially if you cannot physically or emotionally care for one, it could allow for a woman to set up for adoption.
  • @captivated I want you to know I wasn't bashing your choice to terminate...I couldn't imagine having to make that choice!
  • I didn't think that at all :) And even if you or someone did, it wouldn't bother me one bit! We are all entitled to our own opinions. And it was a very difficult choice because of how far along I was. I also had some major complications from the procedure. Was rough all around. My thing is that if this could be found extremely early, it could help one to make that decision and a termination at an earlier gestation is not as dangerous.

As for the woman who donated the organs, I wish i would have been aware of something like that.
  • @HomeBirthAdvocate There's a video on YouTube of a baby making it to his second birthday. He doesn't have a brain. Astonishing really. He can't hear, or see, or feel anything. But he can breathe. I don't know if I could handle that!
  • I think that is abhorrent and selfish. Just my opinion.

  • My husband had a baby with the same problem with his ex and they aborted as well....
  • I do agree that if the baby is going to be born suffering and in pain the family should have the right to choose what they think is best. I also think it should be used only for that purpose, and if there isn't anything severely wrong, the parents shouldn't be told. A waiver of some sort would have to be signed of course. I personally would use it just to see the sex of the baby so I can be better prepared. I couldn't care less if my child had a disability, he or she would be loved anyway. Better me then someone who would see it different to be honest.
  • @captivated, @HomeBirthAdvocate I agree. That baby had no....life purpose (for lack of better wording). Is simply alive and being kept alive just so the mother has a responsibility and someone to love. He doesn't have a personality, he has no memories, he can't love, he is literally just...there.
  • @bettymomma That's the one! :( I could not do that! Its really inhumane!
  • @bettymomma Even the video says that the whole family suffers together. :( Why put EVERYONE through that?!
  • @bettymomma Exactly!!! People really need to be less selfish! I as a Mother could NEVER let my child hurt like that. Poor babies :-(
