Nephew.. Autism? *Update at top

edited July 2012 in Talking
My nephew is 3 (as of May) and he still doesn't really talk. He will say a few words, but has never put a sentence together, ever. He had an appt with a specialist & she suggested to make another appt. My sister said he failed all the tests any child his age should pass. I don't really know the details. He does have a cousin on his dads side that is autistic. I feel like he is normal, just lazy with speech - if thats possible?

** He is diagnosed with slight autism, basically (AS) Asperger Syndrome, the Dr wants to start him on a medication to help with the speech. My sister wants to try it only a month.. just updating.

Can be just a bit slower to learn.. my friends son was around the same. He wasnt mentally challenged or anything. Not saying your nephew is or anything but they had to send him to speech therapists weekly. He slowly began to speak just fine. Funny thing though is that he could remember that show on nick Jr "ni how" or whatever and could speak Japanese words lol but hes in pre school now and his language is fine

  • Yeah I wouldn't worry to much. My youngest sister was slow to start speaking. Barely said anything. But after her first week of pre school she was talking up a storm!
  • Oh @homebirthadvocate his ex-pedi was a POS! Rx'd antibiotics for EVERYthing, even if he wasn't seen.
  • Please look up DAN! doctors in your area instead of going the med route!!
  • I was just going to mention asperger!:). My best Friend's husband was diagnosed with it. At 2 he still didn't talk. His first word was an actual full sentence in regular English, not baby talk.
  • He's a computer engineer now, so don't let a diagnosis get you or anyone in his family down.

  • My brother has aspergers and he is super math smart and critical thinking, some kids with aspergers has trouble relating in social situations some but not all. The medication will help and they are very inteligiant so don't let it be a sad situitation for you or your family. If you guys are having a tough time there are suport groups out there for you and your family. We went to quite a few when my brother was diagosed with it, and it really helped us out :)
