unplanned vbac anyone?

edited May 2013 in Pregnant
I was talking to someone at work who had her second csection scheduled but her water broke at home and by the time she got to the hospital the baby was crowning and she was trying to hold him in. She pushed once and baby was out. I had a csection with my second but went into labor with both babies on my own. I was just curious if any of you went through something similar. My doctor des not do vbacs and honestly I don't know if I would be able to sign all the papers for the risks. But I would love to experience a vaginal birth again. I'm not currently pregnant just thinking about the future

  • I had a c section with my first because of fetal distress I never even went into labor with him he was delivered at 34 weeks. Im currently seeing a midwife who is supporting and encouraging my desire to have a vbac im due in 4 weeks. The only rules are 1) I cannot be induced-no pitocin. I must go into labor on my own but I do get an epidural if I choose. 2) if I do not go into labor by my due date I will be scheduled for a c section on that day. And I wont be doing a home birth I have to be monitored throughout my labor in case something happens and need to have an emergency c section.
  • I was overdue when i had my vbac at home...monitoring can happen at home and going for a vbac but expecting c section on due date is crap
  • @HomeBirthAdvocate I'm curious, why will some insurances not pay for a vbac? I think that's just crazy!

  • I had c-section with my first and not sure what's going to happen with baby #2. I'm due in October. My doctor says if the baby comes on it's own, there will be an 80% chance that there will be no complications having a vbac. So whatever happens happens is her mentality.
  • 80% is way wrong lol its like 0.001% chance of complication ;)
  • Thanks for your input ladies. I had such a traumatic birth with my daughter having an emergency csection and then my dr quitting the practice a few days later. She didn't even wait for me to wake up from the section to ask questions. It took along time to get over it. I would love to experience a vaginal birth again but I'm a scaredy cat. I know cestion can be dangerous too but I'm scared to sign all those papers. And it didn't help when I expressed my concern about dying during child birth my Dr said he had lost a mom a few weeks prior trying for a vbac and she bled out so fast they couldn't eventry to save her :( idk I have a lot of time to think about it. @homebirthadvocate what's makew someone a good candidate for a vbac? And what's an appropriate time wait to get pregnant if I plan on trying for a vbac?

  • My daughter was sunny side up and everytime I would push her neck would hyperextend. The two nurses in the room kept saying dr she can do it lets have her push a couple more times but dr said no. The epidural didn't numb my stomach area so they put me under and I miss the whole birth :(
  • I had a c section with my first because after 23 hours of labor, i was stuck at 6cm. Baby passed maconium(sp), so they wanted to get him out. I had a scheduled c section with my second, but i went into labor 7 hours before i had to be at the hospital. My contractions were right on top of eachother and very strong but i was not dilated at all. Since i went into labor on my own, i thought on the way that maybe i could try for a vbac. When they checked me and i wasn't dilated, i decided to stick with the c section. I couldn't stamd the thought of going through what i did with my first again.
  • Yea I know what you mean @sands3 I guess at least I know I can go into labor on my own and fully dilate.

@homebirthadvocate sorry I forgot to tag you in my last comment
  • My first was a csection .I was induced at 3 days past my due date, and after breaking my water and 22 hours of labor. I stalled at 8 cm , they let me push twice but his head wouldn't come down, so they did the emergency section. With this pregnancy I switched doctors to one in town with a high vbac rate. He is on board thus far. I'm only 13 weeks along but I'm hoping for the vbac to go smoothly! Any advice or concerns @homebirthadvocate @bahamamama4828
  • @G&;EsMama I had to be put under for the exact same reason! So scared of it happening again.
  • I've noticed many issues stem from moms laboring positions, being told to push, sometimes epidurals and pitocin, and doctors failure to wait. Some moms can labor for days and baby is fine. Having your water broken and constant checks causes many issues as well. Being able to labor and birth on your own terms helps a ton!
  • Moms need to eat and drink if they feel up to it but sadly hospitals don't allow that esp with augmented labor. Labor can stall if mom is tired and not nourished.
  • And inhaling meconium shouldn't be an issue if cord clamping is delayed and baby nose and mouth isn't being suctioned out forcing breathing. My best friend had her first c section and recently had her second at home with four days of labor lol exhausting!
  • @bahamamama4828 my water broke at home with my second. The pressure was unbelievable and they had me start pushing at 9 cm. She was crowning after two pushes and doc said she would be out in a few minutes but then they told me to stop and prep the OR. :(
  • I had 2 VBAC's 15 months apart and I was overdue and induced both times. Both successful :)
  • I'm curious, why did your dr quit? Was it planned or because of something that happened? That would be really frustrating after such a traumatic experience.
  • @wilsomom I don't know but she knew she was leaving and didn't tell me. It was xmas eve and 6 out of 8 babies born were csections. If I would have know she was leaving I would have asked for another dr. 4 out of 5 doctors in the practice left so I'm assuming it had to do with their contracts or money. To not even wait for me to wake up from anesthesia is riduculous to me. My epidural wasn't working and I was screaming like crazy and they had me start pushing at 9 cm I could tell the dr. Was annoyed with me screami. But it was painful!! I kept saying omg I have to push the nurse was like no not yet your cervix isn't ready after five minutes of me screaming it feels like I have to push the dr was like fine start pushing on the next contraction without chrcking me again. I admit I wad annoying but I was not prepared for a drug free birth :(
