@frantastic my point being any dog can attack, as a human i understand protecting your dog but you cant do that and not expect to get bit and again any dog in attack mode if kicked will bite, not only pits and they are not known to be people aggressive. Im sorry for your experience i wouldnt wish being attacked on anyone but if a pit wanted to hurt you with their jaw power it would cause much more then 12 stitches, dont blame the breed
I understand @frantastic I've gotten in the middle of dog fights before, its just kinda natural to try to help your pup out. And I don't think you're unjustifiably not liking the breed. Heck, I hate golden retrievers now. Won't go near them!
I personally wouldn't trust ANY dog fully around ny kids, we have dogs but I keep an eye on our daughter with the dogs. ANY breed of dog can be the sweetest dog and then one day attack. I think pit bulls have been given a bad rap.
You obviously want to start something and I'm not interested. If you read my post, I acknowledged that people say its not the breed it's the owner. This was my personal experience and I probably would have had more bites had there not been other people there to help me.
Thank you @natashalynn, I'm not trying to start an argument. I just wanted to tell the author of this thread what happened to me so she can make a better decision about getting a dog.
@frantastic I'm not sure if "you obviously want to start something" was directed towards me but I'm assuming that it was. My intentions are not to argue instead to simply make it clear that the situation you were unfortunately faced with could have happened with any breed of dog. At the end of the day a dog is an animal no matter what breed and I hate to see these dogs being given a horrile reputation.
In my experience some pits are aggressive even when trained and handled properly...but only with other dogs (not people). That being said, all the times I've heard of pits snapping (dogs that had loving owners and had no history of aggression), they were 5 years or older. Is it possible that their temperaments change as they get older?
Honestly...IMO if someone says they do t know why their dog attacked something..it's ALWAYS been wonderful...they are full of shit! I think the first knee jerk action to take when someone has been hurt by your animal, is to say that your dog has always been sweet...hoping that nothing will come of it.
With that being said, I LOVE Pitts! They are wonderful loving dogs! And if someone gets hurt bc they jumped in the middle of a dog fight...well really? What did you think would happen?
I would think that buying from a breeder who has records going back AT LEAST a few generations would be AS IMPORTANT as how the dog is handled and trained. It's thoroughly disgusting that dog fighting is gaining popularity (at least here in metro Detroit). This means more dogs are being bred to be aggressive, and more fighting dogs' litter-mates are making it to households as pets. Good training could mask symptoms of aggression (especially to the untrained eye). As someone who has witnessed a pit who was bred for fighting (I can only assume based on the neighborhood where it happened...and it was during the late '80s when dog fighting was at its peak in Detroit) attack a 2 year old (I'll spare everyone the details but I will say that there's no way this girl didn't have permanent scars on 1/2 her face...I had nightmares for months, and it took years of being around gentle pits to begin to not be terrified of them), I wouldn't begin to think about bringing a pit home whose geneology I didn't have reliable records of going back at least 6 generations.
@Math_Mommy yes I'm def goin to be goin to breeders have that kinda information I'm goin to be very picky wen it comes to getting one even if that means paying 1500-2000k for the dog which is the breeders that have good pups an lots of info on them but I'll do Watever it takes to no everything about it
I agree with @ashleysmashley and @kenzie0713 Trying to save your dog or not you put yourself in a situation to get bit....im sorry but its true....Ive been bit 2 times in my life once but a maltese and once but a cocker spaniel do I hold it against a whole breed because of wht two dogs did? Absolutely not that would be ignorant of me.....A breed as a whole cannot be held accountable for what a few choice ones have done....its just like human beings theres always a bad apple but you dont blame the whole human race for what one schmuck may have done....My intent is not to bash you at all I just hate that when a person has one bad experience they feel a whole breed is just bound to be bad....its not fair and its not right....Its ignorant
We had a police.blotter for my town up until a year or two that documented all police calls and I don't know how many times I read that there police had to be called because a pit either attacked another dog or person. A few weeks ago a Pitt was shot dead for attacking a person a few blocks from my house. I personally would never get one with children in the house but that's JMO.
@pregoagainyay I do not think that everyone that judges this breed as bad is doing so bcuz of personal experience but because of ACTUAL things they read or if they just see how aggressive alot of these dogs act.
And I think everyone that is trying to put @frantastic down for trying to save her poor dog is just ridiculous! With all the passive aggressive comments like basically telling her that she got what she deserved. I thought you guys were all dog lovers, so u mean to tell me if a dog twice the size of yours was about to kill it you would.stand there with a thumb up your butt? BS!
@ashely_smashley then maybe u have different feelings or attachment to pets as others do, because I know 9 out of 10 pet owners consider them family (not me personally) and you don't just stand and watch family as they get.killed.
I apologize in advance to anyone that may take offense over this, but it has to be said.
In my opinion, @frantastic has the right to like or dislike a breed of dogs for whatever reason she wants. Whether it be because she was attacked, or simply because that breed is ugly to her. If you disagree, that's fine because we have that right as well BUT that was not what this post was for. Everyone gave their positive input about the breed and others gave their negative inputs. Its ok to not want a certain breed of dog around your kid after being attacked by a dog of that certain kind. As far as the attack goes, maybe she was wrong for getting in between when the pitt was attacking her dog but she did what she thought was right and you may disagree but again that's not what the post is about. Now if anyone feels like the judgement she made was ignorant, please step back and look at the big picture. Its also ignorant to go back and forth about whether she is right or not.

@Mrz_Jackson i love pets over all! A dog can become a family's best friend. Give us an update when you bring your new puppy home
Never had a pit here but make sure you research not only the behavioral traits of the breed but health risks too. Make sure you can handle any future vet bills that could happen as they age. I've been lucky so far, my dog (Norwegian Elkhound) is 8 almost 9, average life span is about 15 and so far no health problems. He's just a porker lol.
Off subject again I was just looking up the most aggressive dog list and i came across this one where people took a pole to see what dogs they thought were the most aggresive. With no surprise to me they were all big dogs but as the artical goes on the research goes on to say that in that study it was mostly small dogs thay were more aggresive. But because they are small and cause less harm when they bite they arent considerd dangerous.
Basset hounds, labs, and retrievers were the less agresive
I am a big believer in it all depends on the owner and how they treat their dog and how it is trained. The picture i posted of my daughter and my brothers pit is proof of that. I trust his dog around my baby. I know she wont do anything to hurt her. I also know she is very protective of my house and will bite anybody that walks in uninvited. Which is fine by me and there is a note posted at my door letting people know not to walk in with out one of us letting them in. The same goes for my ausi/german shepherd. He will take someones face off if they walk into my house without us letting them in. But they are both fine outside and around other dogs and people I can take the dogs anywhere and not have to worry about them at all. We are down at the river all summer most days and we dont have either of them on a leash. Plenty of people and lots of. other dogs. Not one dog fight not one nip or bite to another person. Nothing they are good dogs. Both of them are on the aggresive dog list to and band form most apartment buildings.
@excitedforoctober regardless if she read about ACTUAL things or not that is a handful if dogs not a whole breed. A pit was killes here because a police officer thought he was going to attack him in the street....he shot the dog.....that dog was on an invisible fence.....The police officer is now being investigated......Goes to show yoi cant always believe what you read
Fact of the matter is any dog has the ability to be aggressive but thevfact of the matter is the schmuks of the world have made it so no one can think/have anything but negative thoughts/feels about the pit bull...Research back in the day these dogs were considered babysitters, before they got such bad media people trusted them as they would any other breed.....People need to educate themselves is what it boils down to stop believing everything you hear and running with it....Learn your facts before you form an opinion....To the OP follow your gut research different breeds and find one that works for you and your family....Ive rescued a beagle/weiner dog mix and a mastiff/pit mix and my big girl fits better with our family.....We love our little guy but hes a nut job where as my big girl is more laid back like us So please just do your research before you all pick a specific breed.....Good luck to you hon and post pics whe
Well said @perly @pregoagainyay I agree. Any dog can be mean and any could be nice. Depends on a lot of factors. Decide what works for you and your family.

Ok I'm done rambling lol
I love our dogs
