any mommies w babies, i need advice! :(

edited March 2011 in Breastfeeding
So I just gave birth to y daughter March 9th. She was a Preemie, at 36 weeks but other than that, in great shape and very healthy! She is 9 days old, and because she is tiny the dr is having me supplement formula and breast, back and forth at feeding times .. my question is, is it ok if a newborn throws up? About 3 days ago she threw up her entire feeding (or what looked like it) and it was more than spit up. It happened within 30 minutes of her feeding. It happened again tonight again within 30 minutes.. m she does not have a fever and does not seem to be sick.. she isn't crying and when she is awake is very alert and happy.. Aldo no problems eating or not wanting to feed.. and wanted to wat rout after if happened tonight.. should I be concerned? Any advice u til i can call the dr will ease my mind thanks!

  • Im no expert but maybe he/she is over eating.
  • Could be lactose intolerate.
  • I'd call the dr. she could be having a reaction to the formula our have reflux problems. Babies will always stop raying when they are full, so I highly doubt it's over eating. Call the dr, they might have a better idea and get you on something to get this corrected. Good luck and congrats!
  • is she throwing up with formula only or with breastmilk as well? to me it sounds like reflux- my son would do that with formula, im sure you have a carseat? like an infant carrier?? what worked well for us and it was dr recomended was to put my son in the carset or hold him sitting up for half an hour after meal times so it all goes down well. also make sure shes not over eating- you should be taking the bottle away every ounce to burp her and youll be able to tell by how insistant she is about getting back as to whether or not shes still hungry or just comfort eating! good luck!
  • @mommytoaprince when my daughter was an infant she would eat whenever a bottle was given to her. Some infants dont know when enough is enough and thats the problem I had with my girl. Thats the purpose of doctors telling us how many ounces to give to our baby and how often at certain stages and ages. A bby can easily be over fed and throw up because of that. If the bby was lactose and tollerant would she get sick every single time she ate?
  • @mommytoaprince- ya if it was lactose youd see it in the stool too either very constipated or diarhea and she would be sick every time
  • Over feeding is something more common in formula fed babies or in cases where the parents are using feeding to quiet every little cry rather than checking diaper, body temp or anything like that. (parents tend to wasn't baby to finish the bottle and they ignore their bodies). I can't speak on lactose intolerance since I have no experience, but I'm not the only one, or even the first one, to mention it. I'm saying it could be something bigger like reflux or some sort of reaction to what baby is eating. Without being there, it's hard to know more than what shes offered up. I'm telling her to talk to her dr in case she needs to switch formulas or something easy fix like that.
I have little experience with formula issues as I was lucky enough to bf for almost 14 months, but I thought she was looking for some helpful advice.
  • Deff not lactose intoll is say stop every few mins to burp maybe she's holding it in then bring it up with her bottle change nappys b4 feed then keep up right ish till little settled make sure no pressure is put on her tummy ( to b clear we no I don't mean bashing her tummy but I mo my son was a bugger for wind so I'd Kat him on his tummy across my.legs) that helped for wind hope the chucking stops
  • also just a q is it smelly like acid smell? or just formula
  • My 3rd child had this same problem and it was reflux to the formula. It never happened when I gave her breastmilk. So I had to give her breastmilk only til 7 weeks and then she could tolerate the formula because she too was a preemie
