breastfeeding in public

edited February 2011 in Breastfeeding
Soo I plan on breastfeeding my baby but I just feel like it might be awkward doing it in public. I had someone come into my store today and she was walking around with her hole boob out niple and all and the baby wasn't even eating at the time it was actually pretty uncomfortable
I know I wont do that lol but it was just weird to me I just don't know if I'm going to like to breastfeed in public

  • Oh thanks! Lol I just though that was crazy walking around the mall with your boob out
  • Here in illinois its actually illegal to say something mean orrude to a breastfeeding mom in public. U can always jus toss a bllankie over baby while it's nursing

Haha yeah that lady must not be shy!!! My mom breastfed my little sister in public, but she always put the baby blanket over her shoulder and then did it.. but that was just at like softball games or when I cheered.. as far as the mall or something, she went to the bathroom or out to the car!
  • Yea I'm fine with putting a blanket over but I think I agree with your mom @mommy3 I would have to go to the bathroom or something
  • Lol yeah she never cared to do it when she knew she'd be sitting there for awhile at my games ya know, but she never just walked around the store, mall, etc doing it lol
  • I plan on breastfeeding my girl, but I honestly don't think its ok to just whip it out in public.. lime a lady the other day sitting next to my table while I was out to eat just starts doing it right at the table... I get when they need to eat.. you have to do it no matter where you are.. I guess I just don't get why they can't sit in the car w the AC on for 10 mins instead at a restaurant infringement of everyone trying to eat? Lol
  • I wouldn't eat my dinner in the bathroom, y should a baby? Theres blankets and things u can use to cover up but its the most natural thing around and we should be proud that we're giving our child the best start, after all, breast is best.. :)
  • I agree.. but then again I don't eat my dinner from boobies. Lol why not the car?
  • If that was me in that situation, neither my husband or i drive so we wouldn't have that option..
  • Well that's understandable.. especially if your covered. I guess I just would feel weird about it just doing it anywhere if I had the option to do it in private but I mean I know its a natural thing.. and I want to do it with my daughter I just feel like some women forget that at the mall not everyone is comfortable with seeing your boobies while they eat. Lol I guess I'd just feel awkward
  • You could always pump a few bottles before going out
  • Agreed. I don't think its WRONG to do it while your out... I just feel like sometime people forget your still sitting there with your boob out of your shirt in public. I guess Im just not comfortable with it like some people! I have a pump.. and will be doing that before I go out!
  • Yea but theres a difference between having your boob out and walking around the mall the covering it up and sitting and I guess it just depends on everyone's personal comfort level
  • I used to just ask to use a fitting room to nurse my son. They almost always have a bench or chair in them and its way more private. I was never turned down. Also most malls have at least one or two family restrooms somewhere in them. I just always preferred the fitting rooms.
  • Lol and yea. There is a big difference between the lady just walking g around and being covered.. lmao I can't beleive that
  • i have a nursing cover i got when i had my son im not sure if its the same thing as the uddercover but it hides everything and most people just thought he was sleeping. the first time i ever nursed in public was at a Marine base when my little brother graduated boot camp they werre all having a ceremony type deal in a building so i went outside..just about the time i got my baby latched Everyone came pouring out..just smiled and walked on.i realized its not a big deal and when your baby is hungry your gona think about feeding it not what poeple think or where to hide!! i wasnt bothered by it after that 1 time and i am a shy person!! i really find it disrespectful to walk around with any of it showing just bc you could easily cover it and somepeople do feel uncomfortable.
  • @mummylady83 i wish there was a love button for your comment :) Breast is Best!
  • I can not believe that people would suggest feeding in the restroom... if you are not comfotable with a woman feeding her baby at the table next to you don't watch.
  • I've nursed all 4 going on 5 of my babies. I bought a cover for under $12 dollars at Target and they sell it at walmart too. Cute print and worked great for me for if I was out or if I had family or my friends around then I'd put it on over my head and drape it over baby and there ya go. If your ever in a dept store you can go into a dressing room to nurse and its private. I used to go sit in my car and nurse my baby.

  • @mama_kat I agree I was never saying its wrong to breastfeed in public I just was saying how shocking it was for a lady to be walking around with her boob out and the baby wasn't even feeding at that time I this it just depends on people's comfort level I am just saying that I think I might just feel more comfortable doing it in private unless I had no other choice but of course I will be covered! Lol
  • When I first had my son I was so nervous covering everything (being a new mom) at the end I would pull my boob out and breastfeed with a tube top on haha wasn't shy at all... it changes trust me lol

  • @mama_kat hows your pregnancy going? How far along are you?
  • I think you should pump some bottles before you go out rather then do it in public I think that's something private between you and your baby on bonding together ....... But that's just my opinion.....
  • My son would never take a bottle and one of the benefits of breastfeeding is the convience of it. As I said before I've never been denied a fitting room and that's all the privacy we need.
