Cleft palate info

edited September 2011 in Health
Soooooo I am a neurotic mom about things I know BUT cleft palate has always been something that has worried me with each of my pregnancys!!! It doesn't run in my family (pretty sure its not hereditary anyways) but was just wondering if any pregly mommys have ever dealt with this??? What causes it??? Im kinda thinking its just like a freak thing that can happen and you can't prevent them.

  • I have not but it was nice to see the 3d ultrasound. Looked okay!
  • Baby just doesn't develop right in utero. I work with babies who are born with them often, and after they are surgically repaired, you can't even tell they had a problem. It's pretty small compared to other developmental problems they could have. ;)
  • I believe baby has to have the gene but a cleft doesn't present without environmental factors. Cigarette exposure, alcohol, some meds, certain viruses within the first two.months. after two months I dont think there is a risk
  • What age are they able to repair them??? I know it should be really low on my radar but it was just one of the things that popped into my head tonight. I worry about EVERYTHING and anything!! Drives my hubby crazy :)
  • Depends on how baby is feeding ans growing. It's really up to the baby's surgeon when it gets fixed.
  • They can repair them early from what i hear. And i heard its not a very serious surgeryvand its like a 2 hr surgery.. ive seen a program about it and after the surgery you cant tell they had a problem
  • Thank you @RTMommy beaded_bunny @blueberrysmom that answered alot of my questions!!! :) Stay tuned for my next neurotic episode!! I am on on webmd and sifting thru the other possible things that will keep me up tonight!!! :-))
  • Forgot my darn @ sign!! @beaded_bunny

@kristen_octoberbby thank you!!!! I knew it wasn't REALLY severe but nevertheless its one more thing that goes on my "things to worry about when I shouldn't be" list :)
  • Didn't they find a relationship beteeet cleft pallets and vitamin a?
  • Back away from the internet...! :ar!
  • Lmao @blueberrysmo real housewives of nj came on and saved me!!! Watching crazy people makes me realize how wonderful my life is :)
  • I was reading about this because someone posted pics of their baby and it had a cleft lip. It is a gene but smoking, drinking, and I think certain meds can cause it
  • Im a waitress & I have a regular customer whose son is 9 months & he was born with it but he had surgery on it at about 3 months & it looks great!
  • I'm surprised that no one said this on here...tylenol causes it , that's why I stayed far away from it while pregnant.. doctors say its okay to take but I wouldn't take it at all.
  • Yea, from what I inderstand, anti-depression meds can cause it. Zoloft, zyprexa and a few others and im sure more...
  • What i have always wondered is babies that have the lip palate, can they still get suction on the breast or bottle??
