No drugs here... First labour was 17 hours second was 2 hours so no time for drugs even if I wanted it lol My recovery was fast, I was up and aroubd almost right away. I dont plan on having more but if I did hypothetically I would go naturally again. If you have the right attitude when you go into it that really helps
If you ladies breastfeed, did the epidural effect the ability of being able to breastfeed? Was there any trouble getting the baby to latch on after the epidural and birth? Of course in your opinnion. :-D Thanks again ladies!!
No, there wasn't any latching problems. Just know that the epidural does effect your baby since its being injected into you,and then going to baby. Also the next day when you go to use the bathroom, the drugs in the epidural will make it soooo hard to go!
If you're wanting to go natural then I suggest you take some childbirth classes.
I had issues, but not because of the epi, mine had to do with my GINORMOUS boobs. They were so large that my LO was not strong enough to draw my nipple out. I wore a nipple shield for the first couple weeks. She's 9 months and is still breastfed.
I had an epidural with 4 out of 5. My first, second, and third I had through labor and birth. My fourth I had at the very end and didn't feel it until I started pushing. My fifth daughter I went completely natural. Honestly...it really doesn't matter. Yeah, you feel a sense of accomplishment after you go through a natural birth, and you can walk right away, but that's about it. Breastfeeding was fine with epidural and without, there was no difference. There was no difference in healing besides being a little more self sufficient. If you can go natural, go for it...but don't feel bad if you feel like you need something for the pain...because it does get painful, and that makes you very desperate. There is no shame in either...as long as that baby is healthy, that is the only thing that matters. :-)
Not very much of the medication of the epidural gets to the baby. It actually doesn't get injected into your blood system, it goes into your spinal cord. I don't remember specifics you would have to look it up, but I learned in birthing class it doesn't go to the bloodstream (otherwise your entire body would be numb). The other meds they give you through your iv does obviously go straight into your bloodstream and affects the baby directly. I personally had issues breastfeeding and my milk never came in but had nothing to do with the epidural. Had other health issues that caused it. My baby was extremely alert right away. He had a small glucose problem but that was caused by my lack of milk and colostrum issue.
I loved my epi I got to relax which was great because I could really enjoy my daughter right away and not be tired. I still had the urge to push thats how the doc knew I was already at 10cm bc I said I really feel like pushing now . As weird as it may sounds but I had fun my friends and family came to visit and b4 my epi I I didn't want to talk to anyone as soon as I got it I was just talking up a storm with everyone which was great bc it made the time go by super fast. And I was up and around right after. I took shower right after I feed my daughter for the first time and had no problem with that. And I had super fast recovery I was back to doing everything normal after 1 week even though I know they say wait 6 weeks but my doc said if whatever it is that u are doing is not uncomfortable or causing pain then ur fine. So I was working out and having sex. But keep in mind I didn't have any tears or burns and was closing up right away.
This may sound rude, but you all know me so it's no big shocker Personally, I don't care if you have gone all natural (I did with my first as my epi didn't take). No one really CARES how you decided to squeeze a baby out your hoo-ha. I have no desire to be superwoman in the birthing room and when you're with a group of people talking about your amazing natural birth, I guarantee not one single person is thinking, "wow! She did it natural!" Hehe. I understand it is a huge feat, but others really don't care. Its like talking about your kids and showing pictures...so when it comes to pain relief, you do what you feel is best for you. It's not a competition. Don't let anyone make you feel like your decision is not a good one. They all have benefits and risks.
@captivated that is exactly what I think well said .. I was pressured by this lady we know to do it naturally but then I realized why would I do that? Bc I noticed with people around me that whenever they hurd that she and this other friend did it naturally they didn't have a reaction at all. And a good friend of mine has 5 kids and some were natural bc they were just too late to get the epi she told me going into it that if u can b comfortable why not? Just to tell people it was natural when they don't really care. Not tryin to b rude. But at the end all that matters is the safety of mother and child and obviously everyone wants to see the los .
Self empowerment? @HomeBirtAdvocate I want that so badly. To feel all of the pain, to know I went thru that pain to deliver a life. Be at peace while in labor and welcome my baby into the world in the most natural way possible! Ugh! I can't wait!!!
And anyways, I was not saying that women should not be proud of natural childbirth. Nor that ALL women do it "just to say they did". The point I was getting at is that I have noticed many natural birth mommas making those who choose pain management feel inferior. Not here, of course. And if one gets empowerment from birth, more power to ya! I feel it is empowerment and a right of passage regardless of whether you had a c section, epi or no epi
