Do you regret your child's name? I do :(

edited February 2011 in Baby names
I first heard the name Mackenzie when I was 10 years old. I knew from that moment on, that's what I would name my daughter. However, her dad didn't care for it & we argued all the time about it & his family didn't care for it either. They liked Jordyn. I decided to compromise & name her Jordyn Mackenzie. The day I signed her birth certificate I knew something wasn't right but I went ahead with it. Her dad was a deadbeat & I felt like I had two kids to look after. It took me until the day before her 2nd birthday to get rid of him for good. My one & only regret in life is that I didn't listen to my gut & now my daughter has a name I never would have chosen for her on my own. If that wasn't bad enough she even has his last name & she hasn't seen him in 3 years. I'm in the process of changing her last name but I wish she was still young enough that I could change her first name without causing any confusion for her.

  • I've never been in that situation, but I think id be the same way! If it makes you feel any better, I think that name is super cute & it'll still be cute when she's older and in high school and stuff! She might just love it when she's older (:
  • At least it is a cute name. Could be worse. He could've insisted you name her Dorkus.... no offense to anyone named Dorkus.
  • You could always flip it.
  • Thanks lol. I like her name & it is cute but everytime I say her name it's a constant reminder of her dad & I hate that.
  • A lot of people go by their middle name.
  • She'll be 5 next Monday & I ask her all the time if I can call her Mackenzie & she says no my name's Jordyn. On Thanksgiving though she told me she was going to change her name to Chicken Wing so I guess Jordyn doesn't sound so bad lol.
  • Lol @ chicken wing. Too cute! :)
  • It is a really cute name. I also love Mackenzie. She might change her mind when she gets older and realizes what you already know ;) good luck!
  • Lol... Chicken wing. Look on the bright side...you could have had a boy and given him the same name as your ex. My sister has to live with that. And since the dad doesn't have a middle name there are few alternatives for nicknames.
  • That's one problem I will never have to live with. I refuse to name my son after anybody. My husband is a 5th & hates his name & I was like there's no way I'm giving my son that name. He will have his own name. His dad was mad but I was like it isn't your choice. If we had a girl I liked the name Brooklyn & his dad was like there's no way I'm having a granddaughter named Brooklyn & I said well this time if it's a girl that's exactly what her name will be so you will have a granddaughter with that name.
  • I agree i was in the same situation with my daughters last name her biological dad was pretty much never there and i had to deal with that name for years now that i re married my husband adopted and the first thing i did was change her name its such a relief
  • Brooklyn is actually the name I liked for my daughter but I told the her father that I wanted him to help with her name so I picked her middle name (Renee) and he told me he liked the name Brenna. So were not 100% just yet but its a good possibility she's gonna be name Brenna Renee. Which im ok with. She's also getting my last not his.
  • She didn't even realize she had his last name until she started school this year & was wondering why the teachers kept calling her Jordyn Darin. When she was 3 I taught her how to spell her first & last name & had her learn my name. My husband wants to adopt her but her dad's rights haven't been terminated yet & in Michigan we have to be married for a year before he can even begin the process.
  • Brenna is really pretty. I have this weird obsession with Y's and so any name I pick has to have a Y in it. Also my son's name is Brayden & I'm having a hard time finding a boys name that I like that doesn't sound like his or ryhme with it.
  • A coworker is in a similar situation. She decided to take him to court so he had to pay child support. With the back pay, he owes her almost $2000 a month. Of course he cant pay this, so she's going to suggest he sign away his parental rights so he doesn't have to pay. Or he can go to jail for not paying child support.
  • He's never paid a penny & I've gone to the courts twice & filed papers & both times my cases expired because his mom kept sending the papers back so he couldn't be served. I have his address, his girlfriends address, cell phone numbers & house numbers & they still haven't done anything. I'm tempted to just go get him myself & bring him to the courthouse lol. I don't know what the laws are where you are but in Michigan I can have his parental rights terminated without his consent if he's been absent for 2 years or more. Also even if his rights are terminated I can still collect child support. 3 years ago I called him to wish him a happy father's day & when he called me back he said he wanted nothing to do w/ our daughter & that she didn't exist to him. I could easily go to the courts myself & have his rights terminated but I told him, I refuse to do your dirty work. You will stand in front of a judge & explain to him why you don't want anything to do w/ your child.
