*Update* African American/Biracial Mommas - Help!

edited May 2011 in Parenting
*Update: just wanted to say thank you everyone for all the suggestions and advice, I went to Sally's yesterday and bought the Liv Creme Conditioning Hairdress, a 5 minute conditioning treatment, and a satin sleep wrap, and did the whole routine last night.. I put her hair in two strand twists using the Liv creme, put her in the satin wrap for bed, and her hair looks a billion times better already today!! So thanks again ladies! :)

My daughter Jada (mixed black/white), age 4, had the gorgeous afro you see in my profile pic til this past January, when my sister took the liberty of putting a Just-For-Me Texture Softener in it. She said afterward she thought it would just "loosen" her curls. Well, it's stick straight. I really really loved my daughter's natural hair, and all these months later, she only has about an inch of new growth. Eventually, I want to chop off the straight ends, but obviously I wanna wait til her natural hair has grown a few more inches. So what can I do with it in the meantime? I really want to avoid flat ironing or putting any other heat on it at all, and I have been keeping it really moisturized, but am I stuck only putting it ponytails for the next six months? (I'm assuming it's gonna take about that long to get some length). Her hair is too soft/fine to hold braids, cornrows, etc, so I'm really at a loss on what styles will work right now, or even how to transition her hair back. And willl coconut oil actually help it grow? Or is there better products out there that will actually encourage growth.. besides good old moisturizing? Help! Any and all suggestions would be very appreciated!

  • Can't really be of any help here but just wanted to tell you what a cutie your daughter is. Good luck!!! :)
  • Is that a perm? If not then try washing it.when I have my hair straight when I wash it,it goes back curly. Even if I sweat it'll start to go back curly.
  • Aw man.Idk but to wait until it grows out.and don't flat iron it(meaning you would have to have her walk around half straight and half curly??

  • Use tcb hair food! When I was younger my daddys girlfriend decided to perm my hair! Took all my hair out. My mother says tcb worked like a miracle.

  • That stuffs garbage & never let them put it in your kids hair again. Texturizer isn't ment to straighten hair so it shows you she let your kid sit in it toooooo long & it fryed her hair. I'm white & my daughter is half black. I've tryed that stuff too & hated it. So last year my aunt thought shed get it & used it for my kids hair & yup her hairs fryed too. But funny thing is my kids hair is almost kinda straight 4 inches from tips & a fro on top. All you can do is wait & grow it out. It mite loosen up some but don't do it again. Keep up burns the hair. My nieces hair is ruined & bald on the sides from her mom putting that crap in her hair for years!! The grow out looks bad but get thru it & moisterize it!! What I do for my kida hair is a simple braid or two braids. Never use rubber bands. I don't. I use barrets. My girls 11 yrs old.& her hairs long & the tips are straight. & look dumb. I was SUPER PISSED. When they did it. These people are white & though I am too. I know what's best for my kids hair & have talked to my hubs fam. & my black friends about these things while my fam knows NOTHING about black hair & think they know better. I hate it!!! But don't let that crap touch your kids hair again! Maybe you can go to a black shop & talk with them about what happened & what you can do.

  • Me n my sister both are mixed white mom black dad , she her hair I didn't her hair still dosent have the natural curls it used to mine does everyone loves my hair try doing chain pony tails to it . Not sure if u know what that is look it up its do easy and will make her hair bros FAST its where you part her hair down the middle then part a line on one side take that chunk of hair put it in s ponytail then behind it part another line and put that in a ponytail with the hair from the first ponytail also going into it it makes a chain lol its cute http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EVCkW8RlBok/TQkyXXA35hI/AAAAAAAACmI/PEjvkDbrX5s/s1600/P1070818.JPG&imgrefurl=http://shaunellshair.blogspot.com/2010/12/little-girls-hairstyles-kitchen-sink.html&usg=__Yd9b9avfC8QfB6Pany5D3eNAUYU=&h=1259&w=936&sz=210&hl=en&start=86&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=io_LvqICtzpVCM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=112&prev=/search?q=chain+ponytails+hairstyle+little+girl&start=72&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&ndsp=18&tbm=isch&ei=psThTbTSFaPV0QHjz7HoBg kind of like that how she has the first two but keep going all the way down
  • I would be pissed as he'll if someone put chemicals on my daughters hair!! Could you try twists instead of ponytails. It may take a little time but would at least be a different look. When I was in ghana my hair got really dry and course from the heat. (Its naturally curly but not kinky curls. ) I used a product called Optimum serum. Its in a yellow bottle. It might help if her hair is more course now and it will make it shiny.
  • OK I have a question, my first is a 1/4 black and she had curly hair as a baby but now its straight. This baby is 1/2 and her hair is straight when dry. She is a month old so I was wondering when will I know if its going to get curly?
  • @Mama2JadieAnNick i use curly Q kids products its all organic an gently but moisturizing an really good for there hair.my sons hair is to fine to I have to stick wit ponytails or plats
  • @Proudmomma my daughter had bored straight hair till bout 5 months then got very little wavy now at 11 an half its ringlets.

  • First of all I would literally kill my sister for doing that. Second, (and I hate to be the bearer of bad news) there's no way to reverse a perm. That's why when we (black women) go natural we have do exactly what your doing with your daughter. We have to wait until enough of the permed ends have grown out and cut it. You'll notice that a lot of us who go natural will wear braids of some sort. Since your daughters hair is to fine then your only options really are hotcombs/flat irons (which you said you don't want use) and ponytails. Another option that may work is some sort of roller set. Maybe rods or straws. It will give her a spiral (shirley temple) curl effect. She will have to sit under a hair dryer but it not as bad as the direct heat from a flat iron or hot comb. It'll last longer and I think its a kid friendly look. It'll also be closest to what her would look like naturally.

Your doing great keeping it moisterized but also be mindful of her ends. You don't want breakage. This can happen easily from the tension of combing hair when it is in the process and growing out because of the different textures.
  • Im sry to tell yhuee bt a perm should nve be put on a 4yr olds hair as they qt older it their hair texture changes bt she is too yung for a perm and sumtimes it can mke their hair fall out dnt put no heat to it at all jus keep it moisturize by her being mixed shes gona hve pretty curly hair bt idk nw tht she has a perm im sry to tell yhuee tht I do hair as well I wish I couldve helpd b4 it was put in her hair
  • Just make no one else puts that in hair. The only thing that u can do is let it grow out and make sure that u keep her split ends trimmed to keep her hair healthy. Until then put some cute little ponytails in her hair!
  • Princesshairstyles.com has some CUTE HAIRSTLYES I can't wait to do these styles to my daughters hair .lol Ohh and my niece lol she's out of town right now but when she comes back I'm gunna be practicing them on her lol.
  • Oh and as for products, there's a line called mixed chicks. Created by biracial chemist for inter racial textured hair. There's also Carols Daughter. Its an organic product line. They have a product just for kids that works with their natural hair texture. I love their products.
  • @mommys1stbundle have you tried Carols Daughter? We have tried the mixed Chicks and like it pretty well but it doesn't maintain my daughters curls as well as I'd like. How does Carols daughter compair? And does it smell good?

@blissmarie23 As far as that particular product I can only vouch for the smell. It smells great just like all the other Carols Daughter stuff. Wether or not it works, I couldn't tell you personally. I've used her other products and loved them but I don't have any kids (just yet) or know any that have used that particular product. It does have great reviews just like all her other stuff though. I have every intention on using that product for my daughter (when she gets here and is ready :-) just based on my experience with other products in the line.

Another good thing is that, unlike before where it was order online only, you can now buy her stuff at Macys. I'm not sure if there's one where you live but you could probably get a sample before purchasing it if there is.
  • Dont do anything just keep it combed and moisturized.... At dat age dey always end up gttn da natural texture back usually within a few months

  • That saddens me that your daughter had to go through that I was 16 when I got my 1st perm and I still regret it ... Before that my mom would ge me and my sister hair pressed. My daughter is mixed with black and Mexican and I don't plan on getting her a perm unless its extremely nappy. Like the other say there's not too much that you can do besides ponytails unitl it grows out.
  • Its in a white container with red on it its a hair dressing & conditioner it will help keep het hair sift & help it grow exact thng happened to my nieve & tht help her out alot
  • Yes! Tht Liv is awesome!
