BabyShower...(advice please)

:)>- Hello Ladies!!!
My babyshower is in a couple week. I have two registries; and I know for sure I left some important items off both (ie. carseat and stroller). I understand a lot of research needs to be put into picking such items. I've been told, "if it's at the store, it's passed all the safety test." :-W Well, if that's the case, why's there recalls posted in the store??? (sorry got off base)
Do any of you lovely preglys/mommies have advice or recommendations on a carseat and stroller? I would love to have a carseat/stroller combo 8->
And, if you've had your babyshower already, is there any items you'd recommend or items I would definitely need; but may have forgotten? Or any babyshower/registry advice in general?
I am a first-time mom, husband's a first-time dad, d day is quickly approaching...Between all that (pressure is on) I am sure I must have forgotten some key items or small things (that make a difference).

Advice Swap!!! ;-)

  • I'm getting the UppaBaby Vista stroller that can be used with a Chicco car seat. It's adorable.
  • Chicco is good, and graco.
  • I got the graco travel system. It's so easy to set up, and take apart. I love it so much.
  • Im getting a chicco car seat stroller combo...the one im getting is rated #1 for safety
  • I find researching travel systems or strollers is hard and long. I've been doing it for about 2 months already and I have 12 weeks left.

Sucks cause I know I wont use the car seat a lot (in nyc) but I still need it to leave the hospital. I found one I love, and has good reviews at walmart. But I have no way of seeing how it is in person first, which is important to me.
  • In my case no one got me any of the little necessities anyways so it was a waste of time putting them on my registry. People usually get anything cute that they think will get a good reaction out of you. You should expect to get breast feeding accessories, health care items, and all the other little things yourself. And expect to receive lots of clothes, toys, blankets, diapers, and wipes from your guests. As far as stroller/ car seat I went with graco. Easy to use/install and has been a trusted brand for ages, plus its easier on the wallet lol ;)
  • Oh and the weight of the stroller for me needs to be 20 lbs or less. I li e on the 4th floor with no elevator.
  • The things that I used regularly with my kids were: bibs and onesies (I went through A LOT of these a day, so I had a ton of them on hand as I hate doing laundry--you really can't have too many of these for the first few months); bottles and nipples (I bottle-fed my kids); washcloths and towels; diapers and wipes, obviously; blankets, because babies are messy all over the place; burp cloths (cloth diapers make AWESOME burp cloths). Anyway, these were the things that I had tons of, and still do.

As far as big stuff, I used a pack n play with bassinet and changing station, infant seat and big stroller, an umbrella stroller, a big swing (for my oldest; my youngest wasn't a big fan--he preferred his crib and mobile, which my oldest found boring, so some of this stuff you will have to base on your baby's preferences), a bouncer or portable swing...and that's really it. If you're breast feeding, the Itzbeen Baby Care Timer is very nice, and whether you breastfeed or not, a Boppy is useful. My kids liked the Bumbo, but I would suggest getting a used one because they're expensive and they really don't use them for too long.
I used a Graco infant seat for my kids, and the matching stroller. It was a nice set and has made it through two kids; in fact, it's still in good enough shape to make it through a third. I have a Combi side-by-side stroller, and that has been great, too. My umbrella stroller was $15 and is also still great, though that's a little rusty now. :)
When you go to pick your stroller and stuff, take it down off the shelf and see how heavy it is, how easy it is to fold up, make sure it will fit in your trunk, and make sure you can easily fit the car seat onto it. Also, make sure that you can still get to the basket underneath when the seat is fully reclined (that's the position it will be in when the infant seat is locked in place). For the infant seat, buckle and unbuckle it a bunch of times and carry it around on your arm for a bit to see if it's comfortable to hold.

I never used the diaper genie (I've found that scented trash bags work well for wet diapers, and dirty diapers we put in grocery bags and throw in our outside trashcan), bottle warmer or sterilizer, wipes warmer, or any other gadget like that. Other people swear by them, I know, but for me it was just extra junk in my already junk-filled house, lol.
  • I have the graco travel system and I love it! It comes with a base so the car seat clicks right into the base that stays in the car and the carseat can go into the stroller too!
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • It appears the Graco Travel System is the way to go... Thank you @firsttimemommytobe @maymommy11 @rockinmomma @natashalynn @caroline8_p
  • @magcaw :-)) yeah, I've been warned about the bottle warmers and wipe warmers, by a big-sister figure. Reading your post made me laugh a bit, as your post read just like she'd said it. It was kind of like reading the transcript from our conversation.
  • @brttnywstn14 Where is Chicco sold?? For some reason it sounds like a Target brand... :-? Is it fairly pricey?
  • @blueberrysmom Where is UppaBaby Vista sold? I have honestly never heard of that brand/company... :-?? Is it a fairly pricey item? Does it not come as a combo?
BTW, thank you so much for your input!! (*)
  • Hi! I registered for it on Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004IYNIQC/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1307255954&sr=8-1

It's $679 and it comes with a bassinet and the regular seat. You have to buy the Chicco car seat separately, though. I guess it's a little pricey but the reviews are so good I fell in love with it. There are some good videos on youtube that show you all of the features, too.

    Oh, thanks @blueberrysmom
My husband seems to be more about style, as he is hellbent on the three-wheeled (usually a) jogger's stroller. I explained to him the fact the baby has to be able to hold their own head before they're cleared to ride in such strollers...his response,"well, put it on the registry anyway... I can see you using it!" I, myself, am more concerned about the carseat to get the baby cleared from the hospital...
He talking about a jogging stroller :-|

Love the info!!! Helps to hear it from other mommas
  • @rckprincess2 agreed... Please feel free to share any info/experiences you may have.
  • @magcaw forgive me... I would like to thank you sincerely for taking the time to share. O:-) I found your response very informative and helpful... It just dawned on me, I never thanked you :-S
    So, again, Thank You!!!
  • @thesmilingbeauty Awww! You're welcome! :D
  • Chicco is at target and babies r us, that I know of. For the travel system its about 279 and up, depending on the model.

Babies r us has jogging strollers that come with the car seat. My bf wants that cause he feels it will last longer with the wheels they have.
  • @caroline8_p you wouldn't happen to know the safety ratings on the jogger combo and which brand is best (jogger stroller)?
Mommy brain or pure unadultrated brain farts have taken hold...if I've not said it: Thank You for your input!!! (*)
  • If you go to target make sure that you wait to buy it until close to your delivery. They have a 90 day rtn policy (regardless of whether it's from a registry) and you must have a receipt. If you buy it too early and decide you don't like it after you've used it for a few weeks, you may be stuck with it. I think bru may have implemented a similar policy (either 90 days or rtns only if you have a receipt--I can't remember bc they started it right around the time I stopped needing to go there so much), but in my experience bru has much better customer service than target.
  • @magcaw agreed on the customer service.
  • these are JUST the stroller.. the second link is one i actually tried out for myself and really liked.

but really, if you can, I'd advise to go to babies r us and really try them out. Its worth the time. Target has some on display too, but you cant roll them around cause they have a security thing on the wheels (losers, but i understand)
  • I just got my carseat in the mail that someone purchased off my registry. Its a chicco keyfit 30 in red and grey from target. It was 160 and rated # 1 in safety. I put the snap in stroller frame because travel systems seem so unnecessary with that huge stroller.
  • There is also this great website that has discounts.

  • I'm getting the Baby Jogger City Mini stroller. It's lightweight, easy to manuever, and folds with just one hand. Ask them to show you at the store. It's really neat! You can attach an infant car seat with an adaptor. Since it has 3 wheels your husband might like it.
