yet another bf question

edited December 2011 in Breastfeeding
My daughter has been cluster feeding for days now any my only problem is she isnt actually feeding, she drinks for a few mins then uses me like a pacifier, this means she isnt draining me and my poor boobs are so full all the time, but the continual sucking is increasing my supply... I already had more milk than she needed now I have more but I dont want to pump as that will likely only increase my supply more.... Suggestions are greatly appreciated cos im sick of having hard boobies lol
She is 6 weeks old

  • Yup, sounds like she using your boobs as a comfort. If you're for pacifiers you can start giving her that instead??? You could also pump out or hand express your extra milk, perhaps store it/freeze it?. I suggest not leaving it in your boobs though. If you do, you may risk clogging your milk ducts and then nothing will come out :S
If that does happen, massage it and put a warm cloth on them... or soak in warm water.
    Goodluck ;)
  • @firsttimer89 I dont have anymore freezer space lol I hate the thought of dumping.
  • i have to hand express when that happens..but its never more than a few days. :)
  • I am honestly really jealous of you then!! lol (The having so much milk part :P)
I tried so hard to BF, I went through such pain for 2 months because my daughter was tongue tied. My milk supply just kept becoming less and less! I would latch her, and try to pump but in the end I would only produce 1/2 an ounce a day...
I'm trying again with this one though!!!
  • @FirstTimer89 good luck! i had 2 babies with tongue tie and them clipped after birth so it helped tremendously (not sure your situation) :)
  • @bahamamama4828 its been about 3-4 days now and im leaving her for an evening in 2 days and I wont be able to pump where im going and will have to hand express... Really hoping it evens out by then or my boobs wont fit in my dress lol
  • it will even out i promise! :) (im small chested so i like fitting into shirts/dresses lol!)
  • @firsttimer89 I have seen a bunch of people mention babies being tongue tied what is it?
I couldn't feed my son because he wasn't able to latch so I pumped, but at 4 weeks he refused my milk, so this time around I got more educated and apart from cracked nipples etc to begin with havent had issues. Im going to look into milk donations in my area cos I have plenty to go around lol
  • @bahamamama4828 I wish I was smaller chested, im a f cup, I have to constantly hold my breast away from my lo nose so she can breath and not be smothered lol
  • You know that little thing of skin holding your tongue down?? Well some babies are born where it's, I guess too short. Their tongues will even look heart shaped because of it, in which case the doctor has to cut the little piece of skin so it will "let go" of the tongue.
Apparently, it doesn't hurt the babies... I don't know though
According too the nutritionist from my Pregnancy group, when a baby is "tongue tied" or even "Mildly Tongue tied", their tongue can't stretch out as much, so your nipple doesn't go all the way back and rest on the soft part at the top of the babies mouth, it just hit's the hard part which makes it painful to BF
So sweep your tongue across the top of your mouth from front too back, and perhaps my attempt to explain won't see so odd hahaha... I tried lol
  • tongue tie does hurt, i had tongue tie and had it clipped myself as an adult. it hurt to stick out before it was clipped and wouldnt go past my lips. my kids tongue tie was at the front of their tongue, it was bad.

Yea, I'm not a fan of people, even Nutritionist's giving out facts like saying "It doesn't hurt" when they haven't experienced it themselves. It was a... sure... moment when she said it.
  • Hmmm... Funny you mention the "heart shape" my daughters is like that but I never really paid much attention. When I first was feeding her I know she wasn't sucking the nipple back far enough and its gotten better as she has gotten older and her mouth has gotten bigger. Sometimes my nipple is a little flattened after feeding but thought that was just me not paying enough attention to her latch. Maybe I need to get her checked just incase...

@tinka1326 im not sure if your babys doc checks stuff like that in AU, they do here but i had to see an ear nose throat specialist to get it clipped. the second time around with my third, a midwife friend was trained in it so i had my babys done at home :)
hopefully yours isnt tongue tied (i almost forgot! in some babies it can lead to speech issues if not treated)

sorry to hijack your thread! :)
  • @bahamamama4828 no im glad you did its good to get new ideas etc. Makes me wonder about my partners kids as their mum had latching issues with both and couldn't feed. They both have a heart shape tongue aswell one kid worse than the other and she has a lisp... Hahaha just asked my partner about it as im writing this and apparently a doctor suggested that if daughter had issues with it to get it clipped lol
Will be taking my daughter to get checked asap, dont want speech issues later on and might improve her latching if she does need to have something done about it.
  • I'm glad mentioning the "heart shape" helped

The more information the better, so hijacking in this case is only a good thing lol
