Midwife question?

edited August 2012 in Pregnant
So I think I remember reading before that their were two different kinds of midwives, or different certifications or something of that nature. Which one am I suppose to be looking for?
Also Ive found a midwife that is working in an OB/GYN office. Is this a good idea?

  • Cnm is a nurse midwife. Cpm works at birthing centers or home births mostly. One goes to medical school but Cnm is more medicalized whereas cpm is not. You probably found a Cnm which is an ok choice depending on the care

One working in an ob office is likely a certified nurse midwife. They are a nurse first and then get their masters as midwife specialty. They tend to go the OB route from my experience.

The other kind is not a nurse first, but just goes to midwifery school instead. I don't know the name, but they tend to be more natural I believe. I think that is what homebirthadvocate is.

  • Yup^^^^ I am a cpm as well. Excuse my phone, it tends to not input words lol.
  • @captivated @bahamamama4828 so which one is better?

and yes i was thinking that one working in a obgyn office may not be a good choice since im trying for a vbac.

Cpm for sure! They are more natural minded. Not saying there aren't any great cnms out there but birthing centers have higher chance of vbacs

now it seems im having a problem finding one that accepts medicaid [-(
  • I wouldn't say one is necessarily better than the other, but depends on what your expected outcomes are and personal preference. For vbac, definitely a CPM. If its not possible insurance wise, then CNM over an OB.
  • @captivated do CPMs not normally accept medicaid?
  • Here they do but not all states.
  • Not usually :(
  • I had a midwife through my ob at the doctor's office but she didn't deliver babies though. I'm thinking you should probably find one at a birthing center if your pregnancy isn't high risk
  • I would call and speak with one and ask if she knows any that will accept. Don't give up yet :)
  • @tootie08 so whats the point of having a midwife if an OB still delivers you? Ugh! This is so frustrating already.

  • @Mimii36 The ob that I went to had a really big office and 2 obs so I don't think they had time to see every single patient at every appt. so they had a midwife there. My pregnancy became high risk at the end so I was glad to have an ob.
