what's the deal with smoking weed?

edited August 2011 in Pregnant
My husband has a friend whose girlfriend is pregnant.. she's an uptight bitch, apparently, and smokes weed a lot. Besides being illegal, what are the risks of smoking weed while pregnant?

  • No one is a 100% sure what effects it has on a developing fetus. Her baby will most likely be fine but there's always a chance it could be harmful, she needs to decide if smoking is worth that risk.
  • I just remember when I was pregnant with my oldest, her"father" would offer it to me and I always declined because I had read it passes directly through the umbilical cord.

  • Thanks ladies.. I don't think I'm going to open that can of worms with the girl, she's apparently super bitch and I don't really know her. But maybe hubs can talk with the boyfriend..

@lMelanson.. that's what I was thinking.. but I knew there was other debates about it, too.
  • My sis was just telling me how a lady she works with smoked anger baby was born with birth defects n posses away. She got pregnant again and is still smoking ... dumbass... anyway it really just depends on so much but really is it worth the health or even life of ur baby? I recently stopped smoking cigarettes and it's been hard. I've been good for over a month now but I snapped n got a oak 2 days ago. Smoked a lot but that night gave then to my husband bn told him to get rid of them in the morning n havnt craved on sense. My bug thing that helped me was I want to see my grandkids. I want to run n play with them. After not smoking I will say I feel so much better less tired n way more motivated
  • She could be having morning sickness. I know it helps with that. As far as accurate fetal effects I know none off hand.
  • Umm im not trying to start anything but my mom smoked while she was prego with me so she could eat. Her dr knew and said as long as she only took 1 or 2 little hits then everything would be fine. My mother is not a dumbass by no means. And I came out just fine no birth defects or focusing problems or even behavioral problems. I don't smoke weed nor do I support it but I don't think people are a dumbass because they smoke weed. That's their choice. Why concern yourself when it doesn't affect you? My bf use to smoke but quit. His brother said my baby is gonna have down syndrome over him smoking...I think no one knows exactly what happens. Im not trying to be rude by this.. I just take offense to calling someone a dumbass over it.
  • I don't think there's been enough unbiased research done to determine if thc effects a fetus and if it does what those effects are. I was also a stoner before I knew I was pregnant. In fact, I was stoned when I did my pregnancy test! I quit that sane day. I gave away what I had left and packed up my pipes and bongs.
Some people say it helps with morning sickness (cancer patients use it to treat nausea) and that if you have an anxiety disorder or some other mood disorder, then smoking pot while pregnant is actually less harmful than the prescription drugs used to treat those illnesses. Personally, I'd want to see some hard scientific evidence before I tell people that smoking pot during pregnancy is ok. My husband's mother smoked pot and cigarettes during her pregnancy with him and he's very healthy and intelligent. That being said, I've also read/heard stories of mothers smoking pot during pregnancy and the children didn't end up so lucky.
  • There is actually a study being done to see if it actually goes through the placenta. I talked to a girl from cali who worked for cps and did the drug tests when there was probable cause and said in her 6 years not a single baby showed marijuana.
  • @victoriab exactly! Unbiased doesn't exist when it comes to this discussion lol
  • If first baby died from birth defects linked to smoking and this woman got pregnant again n didn't quit then yes she is a dumbass. I mean ur fine that's great! But what im saying is if u lost one child n docs r saying its because u smoked wouldn't u stop when u found out u where pregnant again? I mean really?! U lost one due to smoking y risk another? If everything was fine with the first then sure y not? But it wasn't... I just think it effects different people different pregnancies different ways really
  • Some doctors allow it just not after a certain amount of weeks! It helps with nausea...I'd never do it but I dont believe it'll harm the bby! It doesn't cause any issues when not pregnant! But I'm no doctor

Idk what, if any real risk it poses to an unborn child but in this situation I believe it is better to go by that old saying "better safe than sorry".
  • that's not true its not like smoking cigs bc ITS WORSE my sisters they both my mom smoked a lot and they were born with low birth weight and she didn't smoke with me and i was normal it also renders there thought process too for the baby which is the most important time of learning is in the first 5 years and not only that but pot has made my child hood the worst ever i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy when i smell it i think of my mom.... and that's sad i don't think if you smoke you should be able to keep your kids even though its not a hard core drug its unexpectable
  • Not getting too involved in this debate..but the day I found out I was preg I quit. Id feel selfish..like me getting high is more important than my child's health possibly being in jeopardy. The way I see it.. I wouldn't pass my newborn the blunt lol so what's the difference.
  • I had a friend whose baby was born at 39 weeks and weighed 4lbs. 7oz. So they tested her to figure out why and they found extremely high amounts of thc in babys system...I'm not against smoking in any way as my fiance does...but its just not for me...

there's always going to be stories where people smoked and their babies turned out fine but there is evidence that it increases the risks - can hinder brain development and lead to behavioural problems @loveourlittleone is right 'better safe than sorry'
  • @sara102011 when I read it, it was 13 1/2 years ago lol
  • I refuse to resort to artificial medicines... Every morning I take 2-3 hits and am able to keep breakfast down and all my other meals. If I don't, I'm miserable, calling to Ralph on the white megaphone ALL DAY LONG. No judgements please, my midwife knows, and my son is measuring almost a week ahead and is growing and developing wonderfully. My mother smoked avidly with all three of us, my sister graduated top 10% in the nation, my brother was a private contractor who took over Saddam's palace and I graduated with a 3.5gpa, i'm the manager of a store, and I just bought my first house today. :)
  • @suppptayyy that's what my mom did with me. I graduated with honors and was in who's who and had all kinds of achievements. My sister has a genius IQ. She got tested to seeyou last week. I don't judge you. I don't even smoke weed never have been into it but I don't think it kills babies. I think people get overly paranoid when pregnant. Lol no offense anyone. We experience things everyday that are worse than weed but that doesn't stop people. You are brave for posting that!
  • @suppptayyy :) I was super sick too with my first 3 pregnancies and would occasionally take a hit to help me eat and help with the nausea. All my children r super advanced physically and mentally and have no health problems and born at healthy birth weights. I'm assuming the outcome would be different if u were completely loaded every day all day.
  • @kara_lamek ... Thank you :) I don't care about the words that will be said to me, or the people that it offends, or the opinions they have. It's all just words, and they have obviously not experienced the good side of marijuana that I have. I use it for good, not evil and to just "get baked". I would rather smoke a bowl, eat a huge meal and sleep soundly for the night knowing my baby is gaining weight...than suffer all day long not being able to hold ANYTHING down and weekly trips to L&D to get rehydrated via IV. just saying...
  • @nmartinez79 , people just really don't realize how much it helps us.. FUNCTION. I hate feeling the way I do when I go hours and hours not eating. I feel like death. Death might even feel better. A couple hits, and i've chowed down like there was no more food left on the planet, and I feel great, full and ready for my day. It's just helpful.
  • Ppl who want to do it will always find a reason on why its right. Not judging anyone who does do it but I personally will not smoke weed while pregnant. The fact that their is ANY type of risk..small or large...is enough for me to stay away.
  • Can I ask.why pregly has this convo.over and over again? It's obviously not.ok or it wouldn't be a debate....no ones debating on whether.I should eat this Apple....!!
  • We don't need sarcasm or bashing in this convo BTW. thanks.

  • Car seats can be debated over... getting my hair done can be debated over, whether I should use a baby bullet or just my normal food processor will be debated over.......we will all debate over which diaper is the best for our child. But we all know that diapers don't work the same on every child. We know that we have to try out each and every one before we find out which one works perfectly. Water and crackers don't help my morning sickness, ginger ale and preggie pops don't either, i've tried zofran and it didn't work well enough for me to keep flooding my body with it....I smoked a little weed, and never felt better. THAT IS WHAT WORKS OUT PERFECTLY FOR ME. It might not be for you, and it might not work perfectly like zofran works for another person. So until you find your perfect help.
